Actually it was almost the same thing for me. I had the first Walking Dead trade for him to sign and when I asked him if he could sign my book he looked so put out by it.
I said thanks and he said “…uh huh” or something like that and as I was walking away he seemed to shake his head like he was so bothered by it.

I really never understood creators being put off by fans. The fans are the ones supporting their career. If they don’t want to be around fans then don’t show up to a fucking comic convention which is filled with nothing but fans.

I’m not going to say. There are people on this site who buy his book and are fans of his. I don’t want to speak bad about the person. It was my own personal experience and others have probably had different experiences with the individual.

How many of guys are going to free comicbook day this weekend?
I live like an hour away from every comicbook shop in my area, so I going to two shops that I never go that often. The funny thing is that their really across the street from each other.

im trying to spread the word to everyone i know with kids i might hit jim hanelys in the city before i see thor that night in imax at 1030
i usually never go on the day but the 2 stores i frequent usually save stuff for me

@kuru: I know at Green Brain Comics in Dearborn…that retailer is all about kids n community, so the word is being spread as far as he goes anyway. Don’t know about the other guy though.

I see at the comiclocator website that some comicbook shop doesomething with the libary. One of my favorite comicbook shops has their free comic book day at the libary. I wear my 2010 free comicday t-shirt from jan intill now to help promote free comicbookday.
I’m going to my store for sure.
In addition to the free comic book day stuff all the stores are doing my store has a hell of a sale too.
Have off all back issues, half off all trades and hard covers.
One of the stores I go to is having a big sale on Free Comic Book Day too. Unfortunately, I only found out about their sale after I dropped about $70 on back issues and supplies.

I’ve been going there for years and years – even back when they were named “Moondog’s” (which, I admit, is a pretty cool name too). Dreamland has sales 365 days a year on ALL trades and you don’t see that at many other places (in fact – they are the only one I know of). They also have the best selection around so even though I have closer shops available to me, I go there to get most of my comics because they simply rock that hard.
I worked a couple of Moondog’s stores back in the day but not at the Schaumburg one.
I don’t think the Moondog’s chain exists anymore, does it Jose? Were they just taken over shop by shop (like Dreamland took over the Schaumburg one?) or is the chain named something else now?
Back in the 90′s the Moondog’s chain was bought by a corporation. That corporation had a lot of money issues and when they went bankrupt they dragged Moondog’s down with them. Most of Moondog’s old product, fixures and locations were bought up by other comic shops.

NEW Green Lantern trailer! Looks pretty good! Nice to see more of Blake Lively and Peter Sarsgaard. I don’t know why people are complaining about there being too much CGI… how else are you going to have the Green Lantern Corps been in the film? Have actors wear cheap halloween costumes? Anyway, I’m glad they released these new trailers… that first one was kinda bad.
I agree this trailer was pretty good (not really digging the guardians through). I noticed that the CGI has been getting better with each trailer. I wonder if they will be working on this film up until the release date.

Nick Spencer isn’t writing Supergirl because DC editorial didn’t like where Spencer was going with the story and replaced him with Peatty. And for the record I DID like where Spencer was going with the story. That was BEFORE Marvel signed him. I am also going to assume that’s why he signed with Marvel. That fuck up is all on DC.
Ahh I’m with you on that one, I loved the first issue of the current arc, pretty sad. On another note I picked up the Forgetless trade today on advice by my shop owner, since I only had one book on my pull list for a change. What are your thoughts on it? I think I remember you and Elliot talking about it on ccw awhile back but I could be wrong.
I really liked Forgetless. That book made me a big fan of Spencer’s work.
I also really liked Forgetless although I’m not sure what I liked better, the main story or the back-up story. Either way – I really enjoyed all of it.
I consider it all one story, the trade doesn’t do it justice to have two stories separated, but I guess that’s what he wanted. Jose recommending this is what got me into Spencer’s work as well. I just got the Existence 2.0/3.0 trade, and I like that as well.

Oh does anyone know what’s going on with The Brave and the Bold? I haven’t seen an issue in months and don’t remember hearing it was cancelled.
To my knowledge it was never officially canceled but I think it’s safe to say we won’t be seeing anymore issues of it.
Yeah those are my thoughts exactly. I’m still hoping that once JMS is done with the next Earth One book he’ll write another. The issue with Wonder Woman/Zatanna/Batgirl is still one of my favourite books in the past few years.
That issue was great. I found it in a dollar bin, took a chance on it and was very pleasantly surprised. Was the rest of JMS’ Brave and the Bold run anywhere near as good?
I thought all of the JMS’s Brave and the Bold books were good, I liked them so much that I started buying Superman and Wonder Woman, well that was a mistake.
Yes I didn’t read one that I didn’t like. the Dial H for hero/batman one was his first, and was very good as well.
I liked the series, I thought some of the team ups were interseting. The ones I got were the milstone team ups static/black lighting, blue b/hardware, and xombi/specture.
Wow I’ve seen about 4 interviews now with Scott Snyder on comicvine and cbr and I am so impressed with his character and modesty. Not only do I love his work but I have to say he’s fast becoming my favourite writer next to Layman and Spencer. Very nice guy from what I’ve seen so far. He’ll get my money for anything he does.

just got the new mortal kombat and wow is that last boss pure BS, spent an hour and a half getting my ass handed to me before i gave up.
Agreed…but this is how I beat him. Try to stay as far away from him as possible. If he is on the right side of the screen go all the way to the left. He is more prone to taunt you then. When he taunts you shoot a projectile at him. Just keep doing that over and over again. It’s a bit tedious but that’s how I beat him every time.
Another thing I noticed is that this trick usually works a lot more after you have continued once or twice.
Also, except for the big Overhead Hammer Smash, nothing he does gets through a block. For example Baraka. When he’s winding up the hammer, do the double blade charge (Down, Foreward Heavy Punch I think). Get it quick enough, he won’t have the invincibility.
Another thing is I recommend Teleporters. Raiden Owns him HARD. Port Behind him Back forward and “ALGLABABABABALALABABABLANBA!” or whatever the hell he says. When you land from doing it, Jump Backwards once (Avoiding Shoulder Slam) Port behing him and rinse repeat.

Having absolutely no experience with manga, none whatsoever, which series would you recommend for me to try out?
Bonus question: what is it about manga that appeals to you all, and seperates it from American comics (beyond obvious differences in page size or the comics mostly being b & w)? I see you folks raving about manga, but I’m not always sure why.
I’m loving Gantz and that is the most exposure I’ve had. I’ve been meaning to ask the same question as you as I’d like to sample more Manga
Its a different way of storytelling. New and unique characters, Japanese culture, kinda hard to explain.
I recommend Metro Survive. Its not the best manga book, but its an easy and enjoyable read.
I recommend Monster and Pluto.
MikeF is the resident expert, and usually answers this question like once every 3 months. So just pay attention to his posts.

I was actually re-reading MONSTER a few weeks ago and remembered just how detailed Urasawa had that storyline! Such craftsmanship! No wonder he’s a best seller in Japan 8)
I could go on for hours answering this question but I think I will just go with 20th Century Boys or Gantz. The first is a slow paced, character driven sci-fi mystery while the second is a fast paced sci-fi orgy filled with action, violence, blood and bewbs. Pick your poison.
Or if you like baseball pick up Cross Game. That’s currently my favorite manga…and I’m not really a huge fan of baseball anymore. Go figure.
Gantz, Pluto and 20th Century Boys are ALL given great titles. Everyone seems to like them.

I have not read it yet but Dark Horse is about to start printing the final volumes in a series called EDEN: IT’S AN ENDLESS WORLD. I have all the older volumes and I cannot wait to read this book.

I’m a Neal Adams fan, but Neal’s variant cover for Ultimate Grifter…er,uh..Hawkeye is not his best work. Trying to look on the positive side, at least the Ultimate Line having Hickman and Spencer writing for them will go back to having actual you know, STORIES in them.
Also, I don’t think that is the real cover to the new Ultimate Spider -Man since the new “Spider-Man” is probably gong to be female.

So I got mortal kombat and now i’m digging for more fighting games, was thinking of marvel vs capcom 3. Is it worth picking up at all or is mortal kombat far superior. Also I was afraid mvc3 might be hard to pull of moves without using easy mode. One last concern is it even worth playing single player in mvc3 or is it all online.

Locke & Key is one of my FAVORITE comics in the last 5 years too! The story and art on the first few volumes are both fantastic. The Hardcovers are especially nice collections… Excellent presentations.

OMG – run, don’t walk and read the three volumes available right now in trade! I just finished reading volume 3 a few days ago and the book gets better and better (and it was great to begin with!). Writing is top-notch and the art is stunning – I don’t think you will be disappointed.
Hey everyone!!! I am here back at my computer since a game is on I REALLY want to watch so I need to go to the computer for that (since I have no cable). Just to let you all know I recently bought a 250GB XBOX-360 and that has consumed 80% of my time the last 2 days in a row!
So now just wondering since I have a console… What games have you all been playing recently?
Uncharted, Uncharted 2, and will be hitting Infamous tomorrow. I was a late comer to those three, but I’m pretty sure they are PS3 exclusives, so I really recommend Red Dead Redemption, Dead Space 1 and 2, Mafia 2, Gears of War(Xbox 360 Exclusive). That’s just a start.

If you’re going to do Mass Effect, you should get it on the X-box, as you can play the first game as well, and they link into each other very well.
Or you can buy it for the PS3, do the interactive comic to make your choices from the first Mass Effect and also get all the Mass Effect 2 DLC free on disc.
Oh, also you won’t have to worry about your PS3 red ringing. That’s a bonus.

Man, I couldn’t even make it past the second trade my first time around. Not my cup of tea at all.
When it comes to Sandman I find self indulgent and relies much on the art to progress the story, but if you absolutely have to read a Sandman book volume 4 would be a good start. Or if your like me an like crime/noir with a little horror/thriller twist you can’t go wrong with Sandman Mystery Theatre.
Sandman Mystery Thriller is a TOTALLY DIFFERENT ANIMAL than Sandman. Related by name only.

Was Lucifer any good?
It had it’s moments but it did NOT catch hold of me like I expected. NOT at all. By the end, I was glad it was over.
No slam to the creators… I just felt it went on too long and had definitely run its’ course.
I thought Lucifer was very good.
I might pick up some “Lucifer” trades this weekend. I’ve been enjoying Mike Carey’s and Peter Gross’s work on “The Unwritten” and have been on the fence about “Lucifer” for awhile now.
Lucifer is NOWHERE near as good as Unwritten.

If you’re thinking of re-reading it, go for it. It is defiantly a deeper work that is worth multiple readings. Personally I like the one off stories a bit more myself. But it’s a great story even if the art isn’t always the best for they style.
I see that Elliot is hosting a Q&A with Jonathan Hickman on Free Comic Book Day. My question is why Ultimate Hawkeye? Why FF? Why takeover Secret Warriors and keep it around way longer than it deserved? Also, Whatever happened to Plus?

The answer to all those questions is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ (but thank god he took over FF, his run has been great, I like when a creator takes ownership of a comic series and makes it different and there own, and still sticks with the title for a long run. The only other main stream book that are doing that, that I can think of is Morrison’s Batman)

DC plans to re-release a couple of their Absolute editions. I was wondering which books the IMJ nation would like to see in a Absolute edition, it doesn’t have to be a DC book. Also, are there any books you don’t like seeing in a Absolute edition like Identity Crisis.

It looks like Blankets will be re-released in hardcover with a new cover, and in a different size. Close enough for me. I prefer to have this book in hardcover only because such a big book depending on which edition you have the paperback cover tends to fall off after awhile.

this is by far my favorite comedy on tv, the season started out a little slow but the last few episodes have been amazing. NBC kinda screwed them over this season by starting them mid season so less parks and rec this year

just got back from THOR. is it just me or did anyone else find it boring? it blew its wade real early in the film and dragged on. the two female lead actress’s were horrible! natalie portman and whoever her assistant was. can we please keep natalie out of “nerd” films? im not saying she is bad i think she is a awsome actress but when it comes to these kind of movies she is just awful! the whole movie left a bad taste in my mouth.
I also just got back, and I actually liked it. Besides the SHIELD stuff that felt forced, I thought it was enjoyable.
That’s damned disappointing. Were the special effects good at least?
the special effects where fine. regarding the SHEILD stuff i thought it was not as forced in this movie as it was in iron man 2. This movie felt like it was going know where to the point where i wish they would talk about the avengers at least that would be more interesting. It takes thor a friggen hour and twenty some minutes to finally get back in his costume when he is cast out -_- It was like batman begins without charecter development.
i liked loki alot more in this, at least he was interesting.

I also was a little disappointed in the movie and agree that it felt like it dragged on a bit. Though it was not bad at all, it was enjoyable. I think IGN’s review of it hits the nail on the head. I will say that, if I can find more people to go with me, I will go see it again. A good start to the summer movies… Bring on Cap and GL!

In most cases I would agree. They only gave it a 3.5/5 which isn’t great and isn’t bad. They addressed the main things that I was a little disappointed with.
Did Thor smash anyone in the nuts with his hammer? If the answer is “no” I could see IGN giving the movie only a 3.5 for that reason alone.

Given that the last two comicbook movies I checked out were IronMan2 & GhostRider…My exspectations r fairly mid-level. Thor never being one of my fave characters (by a long shot)I imagine it’d be pretty tough 4 me 2 be flat out disappointed by this film, but then again I went in2 G. Rider w/ barely low exspectations, & it still disappointed me by not even making it 2 my minimum exspectations. At its worst, Thor’s gotta be better than that!
I got to ask this what is the appeal of sports games like madden? Every year is the same game with good looking graphics and some new features but that’s it. Madden 08 was the last sports game I play then after I now play mario sports games and there were more fun then the other sports games. So I have to ask again what is the appeal?
I don’t like Madden, but some of my sports nut friends buy it every year. It’s mostly just updated rosters, and to play online. Fifa soccer is the only sports game that’s any good.
I agree with your FIFA comment. It’s the ONLY sports game I have enjoyed in the last 10 years.
Pro Evolution Soccer has always been our all time favourite. But I’ll admit FIFA beat them a couple of years ago.
I’m waiting for their world cup rugby tie in. SUPPOSEDLY coming out this year but who knows.
Luckily my sport only warrants a game every 4 years or so, so the jumps in graphics and gameplay is noticable.

Although I think there’s flaws in the first paragraph, this article was definitely food for thought.
I totally agree with you. There are definite problems with the first paragraph, the most glaring being about Wonder Woman, but I thought the rest of the piece was quite interesting.
Yes, the Wonder Woman thing was exactly what I was thinking of. That and James Bond as a “realistic” hero. Hell, even when I was a kid we knew James Bond was a wish fulfillment fantasy character. I’m sorta willing to include Ethan Hawke too. Ever see MI:2? Not only is Ethan a sub-Bondian character there, the laws of gravity stop working in the final act of that film!
But I think it’s very interesting what the writer said about the the male gaze and how female action heroes might be more acceptable in fantasy settings.
Also the de-sexualization of female heroes. I have a DVD of MY YOUNG AUNTIE, a martial arts film from the 70′s. One of the extras by Elvis Mitchell briefly touches on the same issue, that many of the girl samurai in these films seems virginal or non-sexual. Where’s the long time love interest of Ms Marvel these days? Look what happened to Trevor Barnes from WW…he wasn’t just written out of the comic, he got KILLED OFF!
