Insideman’s WTF?!? Liefeld’s Hawk & Dove #6 Cover

On Tuesday January 4th, 2011 Stan (The Man) Lee received a much-deserved Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Hollywood Boulevard.

On the same day, Rob (Ex-Penciler of The Infinite) Liefeld tweeted the following poisonous message:

“Hopefully the Ghost of Jack Kirby will show up today and kick Stan’s sorry ass as he gets his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.”

Wishing VIOLENCE, even IMAGINARY violence, on anyone– let alone an Octogenarian– is never classy, Rob.

On Wednesday February 1, 2012, Hawk & Dove #6 will be released to comic shops worldwide… With one of the most completely generic, soulless drawings of Batman ever committed to paper– let alone released by DC Comics. Take a good look at the image, Liefeld’s Batman could be any character from any comic. Take away the pointy ears, redraw the cape and change the chest logo– and Voila! You might as well be looking at Hawk in a dark grey costume.

Which leads me to wonder if the Ghost of Bob Kane will be showing up Wednesday to kick Rob’s sorry ass.

Just my opinion and thoughts, of course– but you can click HERE to see I’m not the only one that was outraged by Liefeld’s shitty remark.

The Good News? Stan, of course, seemed to have cared less about the controversy… If he even knew about it all. In fact, he really seemed to enjoy his special moment.

Hilariously (at least to me), another Image Comics co-founder, Todd McFarlane, understood perfectly the debt he owed to The Man that day:

It’s too bad Rob Liefeld would waste a wish to resurrect Jack Kirby just to hurt someone, instead of say.. wishing the Jack Kirby’s ghost would come back and teach him how not to be a horrible comic artist.

Normally, I try to not be too critical of someones artwork, but I couldn’t help but notice on the cover that Ian posted that top and bottom half of Batman’s body don’t line up in anyway that makes sense, instead of starting over from scratch, Liefeld just draws a shapeless blob for Batman’s midsection and hopes for the best.

Generic is right. It doesn’t even look Bats is supposed to be swinging! It looks like a standard shot of “hero leaping” and Rob just added and arbitrary rope in Bruce’s hand.

  3. Locusmortis says:

There should be a Star for Jack Kirby as well as Stan Lee. I have some issues with Stan Lee but I still love the guy, Rob has got this the wrong way around.

And as zingers go….invoking the ghost of Bob Kane? Lol thats the Bob Kane who drew every single issue of Batman and Detective comics up till 1968 right ;-)

    • Insideman says:

ROFL! Yeah, it’s the exact same guy. ;)

He was tough too… And I bet his ghost really could kick some ass… If it could even be tempted into being bothered with this crap in the first place. :D

On an entirely different note– imagine me, sitting in a chair, watching Bob Kane draw me a picture of Batman on a restaurant menu. Now imagine THAT priceless quick draw looking 100 times better than the image above. Believe me, it’s not hard to imagine.

  4. There are only a handful of writers/artists whose work I will NOT buy. Liefeld is was of those names. I CAN NOT STAND his artwork. Kudos to Kirkman for ending The Infinite.

I think he proved by his comments that he is just not a good person. Kind of disappointed that DC is giving him work. I told my comic vendor to drop Deathstroke(what? it’s a fun read lol) the very second he comes on to write/draw.
