Hey guys sorry for the lateness, we do normally have the video’s up on Tuesday, we ran into a few snags in editing. Obviously it’s SKYLER’s Fault.
l kinda missed your point on Action, Tom. What primarily did u not like about Rags art? W/ me… l had a prob w/ Rags not being able 2 stay on schedule, and wasn’t crazy about his inker.
l agree and disagree about l, Vampire. lt’s my fave of the 52, but the art, l find….a joke. Like Jae Lee, and Bradstreet, until some1 can prove 2 me otherwise, l’ll continue 2 believe that they don’t draw, they just doctor up photos, & call it a day..
Also, still getting M;Glories in trades; Not weary of it, yet. 0f course l’m only two trades deep, but l’m still looking 4ward 2 future trades!
I just don’t think it was a good natural fit, for Morrison’s story. Nothing looked natural, Clark was supposed to have baggy clothes but Rag’s kept trying to add muscles and detail that doesn’t need to be there. Also the Jeans on Superman never looked natural or very good.
I like the art on iVampire, at least it’s moody and try’s to something else than the norm.
As always thank you for watching and commenting Phil!
Agreed with I,Vampire. I read the first issues a few days ago and I really enjoyed it. I also had the misfortune of reading it a night and the story and art creeped the hell out of me. However, I disagree with Red Hood and the Outlaws. I’ve only read the first issue and I thought it was terrible. Does it get better after that first issue Tom?
I think Wonder Woman has become my favorite of the New 52, especially with the newest issue. I don’t think it jumped the shark. Maybe that’s because I haven’t read as many comics or Wonder Woman for that matter as you guys have, but I thought that issue was very bold and it’s great to see someone doing something bold like that.
I like David Finch’s earlier art. Now I think his art is okay, I just don’t like how he draws women and his covers are not good.
Good episode guys!
If you really didn’t like the first issue of Red Hood and the Outlaws probably not worth going out and getting the rest, but since I read every book in the New 52, the full arc in that book was a nice surprise. I think Roy and Jason are a great match up for a book.
I’ve been reading Milligan’s Hellblazer run for a couple of years now so I knew what to expect with Justice League Dark. I’m enjoying the book but I agree…really lookin forward to Lemaire coming on board.
I was reading Hellblazer for a while, but I missed a couple issues and never had that drive to go back to it. And I do like that Milligan didn’t make them this functioning team like the regular Justice League.
I dropped Justice League Dark with #5, its just so slooooooooow and thats the problem with a lot of the new 52 books, even the good ones. Superman I dropped with issue 6, it was an ok book but definitely not Perez’s best work.
I dropped legion of superheroes with #6 as well. I loved both Paul Levitz’s previous 2 Losh titles (Adventure comics and Losh) so its doubly disappointing that the new Losh is so dull. Its definitely not helped by Francis Portela’s distinctly average artwork. When you have a title with dozens of characters, most of whom can fly, you need to have some dynamism but his art is so static, it dosen’t do the title any favours.
Wonder Woman is a bit slow but otherwise is fine. Batman is great but I’m dropping it when it goes to 3.99, I’ll trade the main story later, I have no interest in backups from DC anymore. I pretty much agree with Tom about Action comics. The first couple of issues were good but Morrison dropped that storyline in favour of retelling Superman’s origin, like we need that again ffs.
Animal is great, I read #6 yesterday and thought the story was quite clever and Pugh’s art suited it. You guys complained about Travel Foreman leaving the book but perhaps you didn’t hear why, iirc one of his parents died during his run on the book and drawing gore wasn’t easy for him and he wanted to move to a less horror-based title
OMAC was one of my favourite titles, it had dynamic art and Crash, Bang, Wallop storys and was a breath of fresh air. Batwoman is another great book, William’s layouts are fantastic. I’d be happier if the book went to bimonthly though and it was just him doing art, or else let him do a couple of hardcover GNs every year.
The story thats really ticking all the boxes for me at the moment is the Judge Dredd “Eve of Destruction” story in 2000AD weekly, its just a pity its so difficult for people to get in the USA, the story and art is fast-paced yet complex and multi-layered and the art is top notch. .
I have never read 2000AD. I need to change that soon.
I do want to say to those that dropped Superman on issue 6, check out 7 next time you are at your LCS. Dan Jurgens took over and there is a significant improvement in the the writing. I’ll be the first one to say that I think he was meant to write Superman.
As for the rest, I agree with the best of the best Tom mentioned. Everything else I pick up from DC I pick up out of liking those characters personally, but I’m even starting to drop. I was hopping #7 was the last issue of the The Dark Night arc. That was the only reason I kept picking it up. but I refuse to get #8. Action and Detective I get cause they are Superman and Batman. I also am a guy that really tends to make art bellow story in importance to me.
I pick up most of the Dark line because in any comics its the dark, occult, bordering on horror kinds of stories I gravitate too. I have to say though that I, Vampire is kinda iffy for me, and it maybe that I have just read too much vampire literature as a horror writer that I can’t appreciated like everyone else maybe able to. Frankenstein, unfortunately, is getting really long winded on this second arc and I don’t know if I’m going to keep it. Resurrection Man was also odd. The Fan service thing was weird in those issues. It felt like it was out of left field. and the issue or two have been kinda “one and done” but with nothing really meaty to hold onto. I lucked out I read them together, but like Fran, I may drop this too. I was really pissed with the way the last JLD ended. I know they are going into the crossover with I,Vampire, but nothing happened in it.
I’m also going to stop getting All-Star Western. I liked the first arc, but the second art is horrible and the art seems to be worse. All the back-up stories suck, and they say it’s worth an extra buck because of them. If they took those out, I might hang in, but since they won’t it’s gone.
All that leaves is Batwoman and Supergirl which I think are the better of books in that middle area. Anything I don’t get isn’t that I don’t think they are good, they just didn’t grab me. I checked out all the first issues and had to debate what ones I really wanted to get. I wanted to like Blue Beetle–I’m a huge Ted Kord/Blue Beetle fan, but when it felt like they were doing nothing new that what they did after infinite crisis or 52 or which ever BB came back, i said forget it.
Great list tom, I almost agree with you. Batman, Aquaman, wonder woman, Red Hood and the Outlaws, Batman&Robin and last but not least Swap Thing. There the best dc has to offer. Jon as for AVX, I only can handle one event at a time. The one i’ll get is “the nite of owls”, avx does sound intresting. I got childrens crusade the other day and it was great. I hope it has some impact on the story.
ajjackson – I totally hear you! And honestly the court of owls is wayyyy more groundbreaking at this point compared to AvX. I did luck out this week at my LCS because they got shorted on AvX #1′s, only got 6 copies in, and the owner gave me one so I could review it. All in all I really think the event has a great *set up* to get people motivated and excited, however, I’m concerned the event as a whole may be a flat tire. Also, not looking forward to Cyclops crying and remembering Jean over and over again. We’ll see though – maybe this will provide Cyclops some closure and we can have new topics in the X titles
.
I heard a lot of great things about Omac, which sucks because there is no point of getting it now. It seemed to be the type of book that DC promised and the only one they truly delivered on; something that wasn’t drawn into a certain number of issues for an arc, a fun a different story and not something dark and trying to be Marvel.
Nightwing I just can’t agree with. I think I read to issue 4-5 and the story was pretty flat for me. I loved what Scott Snyder did with Dick as Batman, and I loved what Kyle Higgins was able to write with the help of Snyder in Gates of Gotham, but I just can’t get behind his Nightwing. I felt like I saw the same thing for 4 issues and for me that is a deal breaker. It didn’t feel like the same character that we saw in Detective Comics months ago. It really just didn’t do it for me.
You talked about change in creators. I agree that Travel Forman should be staying on Animal Man. I really can’t imagine anyone else with that book. Many of my friends hated his art style. But I think it suited the book tremendously well. I think the best thing is when the art matches the story. Examples of that are Animal Man, Green Wake and All-Star Superman. Art that just fits the story so well, you couldn’t imagine anyone else on it. So it bugs the hell out of me when people like Rob Liefeld get put on three books (only drawing two of them) when his art style is hated by the vast majority of comic fans. Jon how do you feel of having Liefeld come on to Deathstroke? I thought the first few issues were pretty decent, but just couldn’t justify buying it after issue 2 or 3, but I would be dropping it so fast because of Liefeld coming on board. Why do this to decently successful books? Are they trying to get them cancelled?
I want to say Morning Glories was alright. I don’t mind a slow burn story, I stuck it out with LOST for all its seasons. Which I would say was a slow burn for at least the first 4. The thing that really did it, to make me drop that book, was a couple of weak issues (around 9-10) and delays. Those two combined made me drop that book. It was delayed and had a couple of weak issues, and I just couldn’t justify picking it up any longer.
I am down to about 6 DC titles after a trial of close to 20. I still pick up, Supergirl, Batman, Wonder Woman, Animal Man, Swamp Thing and Batwoman (though I agree, this one may be on the chopping block soon). It is kind of funny, because at one point I was up to about 10 DC titles before the new 52 and was almost down to 3 before the re-launch. So, I don’t really know if the new 52 really made that much of a difference.
One of the reasons I miss Snyder on the Dick Grayson character is that he didn’t need to write Grayson as a poon-hound. I love Nightwing but I dropped the title. It’s too “Vanilla DC”.
Towards Deathstroke and Liefeld I am curious to see where the series will go. Something about the series so far I really like, but that of course now has the potential to change. I’ll give it the three issue chance, if it declines each time and I’m disappointed I’ll eventually drop it. I don’t know though – I really like Deathstroke as a character so I’m (hopefully not putting my foot in my mouth) confident the series will continue to be amazing. The presentation of the book itself is important to me as a reader, so I need both a good story and great artwork, if I can’t look at it how can I justify purchasing it. Geez I sound like a crotchety old consumer – haha. Liefeld wrote a bit back in the 90′s I believe and that didn’t go quite as well as he would have hoped, however there’s always that second chance. We’ll have to see though
. Don’t kill one of my favorite killers, Liefeld

Nice
I am pretty sure that Didio’s Top 10 pales in comparison to Jon’s Heros & Villains Top 10.
Serious..awesome book
I have just read Infinite Kung Fu….and I think its right up your ally Jon
Lol – my lists were pretty random weren’t they. Infinite Kung Fu eh? I’ll get familiar and get back to you. Thanks!
.
Jon, I reviewed Infinite Kung Fu back in August when it was first released as a collection.
Warning: It is NOT a long review… It gets its point across VERY quickly!

Lol! – that review was awesome. Yeah I’ll have to check it out though – also I’ve read a few times now that I need to check out Chew as well. I’ve got some homework to do
I will keep you guys posted. Thank you
!
I liked fairest (vertigo) . Thought the art was grate and the story was good so far. I haven’t read the old fables yet but I was interested after you talked up the old stuff.
Totally check out Fables as well! Great series! Fairest is fun, I liked this second issue a lot.
Another fun show guys! I gotta admit I’m one of the ppl who had a problem with AVX #0. I will acknowledge that I have nostalgic feelings for certain characters, so that may be part of it and also, I didn’t read Avengers 24.1 and maybe certain things were addressed there, so Jon please correct me if I’m off base, but my issues were…
Vision: “I’m talking to my wife.” NO, YOU FREAKING AREN’T. They haven’t been married for at least a few years in comic book time and 20yrs in real time. The marriage ended because you Vision got torn apart previously and when you got put together that time YOU decided you didn’t have emotions anymore. Both characters have moved on since then and Wanda even had a romance with Wonder Man.I know in real life ppl sometimes break up yet still have feelings for each other, but at this late date Vision doesn’t get to refer to Wanda as “my wife”.
Children’s Crusade: The Avengers knock themselves out during the mini series trying to find the Scarlet Witch. At the end Capt America says, “You’ll always have a home with us.” So, in AvX she comes to them willingly looking for help and they turn her away?? What?! It’s one thing to ignore continuity from 10 yrs ago, but this story just ended last month!
Logan referring to Vish rejecting Wanda: “It’s his call.” NO, IT FREAKING ISN’T. Cap is the leader and Tony owns the building and if the other Avengers accept Wanda then Vish should have to suck it up. Yes, he has a very legitimate reason for being angry however, the Avengers have long history of ppl being on the same line-up with other ppl they actively did not like. He could always quit if it bugs him so much (long history of that in the Avengers as well).
Those were my major problems. Minor problem is Frank Cho draw Scott looking like an very ill person. And Scott’s a prick, but he’s been that way for a few years, so I can’t blame Aaron for that.I know alot of ppl are excited for this series and I’ll probably pick up a few based on the art teams, but I’m skeptical..
Anyway thanks for letting me vent.
Oh no!
!! Nah it’s okay. I’d say with Vision emotionally dense, and being ripped in half, that he must have had a brief moment of confusion thinking it was *his house* instead of Starks
. haha. But in all seriousness I dunno I mean, if they were married at some point, then that heavy moment was probably best left between Vision and Wanda. Wolverine, more than likely, probably was worried his healing factor didn’t cover marriage drama.
. And if Wolverine can’t handle it, then the other guys are probably like “yep you handle it Vision, one ring to rule them all (marriage ring, Lord of the rings..my humor is off today)”. With Wanda’s being turned away, maybe that happened because of the tension between the two. I’m drawing at straws of course at this point lol. All in all I liked the set up for the event, but I can see where you are coming from. Also, I am skeptical if the event itself will be note worthy or not. Fingers crossed
!
