    Good show as usual guys.

I want to clarify something, despite all the shit Marvel gets up to, I still love Marvel characters and have done for a long time. There are Marvel books that I wish I was still getting and my last column explains why it isn’t any easy stance for me. To paraphrase John F Kennedy “We don’t do these things because they are easy, we do them because they are hard”. Its not easy to hear your mates say how great The Avengers movie and I have to explain for the nth time why I am not going to see it but hopefully if people speak out about it, it might help the situation.

And its not just Kirby, Don Heck was involved with Lee and Kirby in creating Iron Man and co-created Black Widow and Hawkeye with Stan Lee. Now that Kirby’s family are getting treated so bad, Hecks family have no chance of benefitting either.

Incidentally my next column is a manga one.

Just starting to watch this week’s episode, so I won’t comment about those subjects just yet, but I will say this: You will both LOVE The Avengers movie. No doubt about it.

Btw, is any of you enjoying Jonathan Hickman’s run on F4/FF as much as I am? It’s brilliant. I started reading the Fantastic Four when he got on board (I read Dark Reign: FF and went on), and it was a LITTLE bit confusing at first, but now, after reading up to #605 on F4 and #17 on FF, it’s OUTSTANDING. Everything clicks and feels in place. I haven’t enjoyed a Marvel comic as much as this one in a long time.

I love Hickman’s run on Fantastic Four. It is by far the best recent example of how to do long form storytelling in Comics. Hickman continue’s to be the next Warren Ellis, IMO.

  4. If I could, I would skip out on the Avengers movie myself. The only reason I don’t is that comic movies are one of the few things I can share with my dad. He loves them. He isn’t a geek like us and watches the industry while we read the comics. He just enjoys them like he did back when Kirby and Lee were making them as a kid. If comics weren’t one of those ties that are integral to our relation ship, I think I would have an easier time being a stalwart supporter of the creator’s rights fight.

    • Sergeant says:

I feel we have to support the good ones to show it is a market that should be built on. I don’t need anymore Scary Movie 1, 2 , …… Notebook, or sequels to Predator or Aliens.

    • Jon (of aCBL) says:

I love watching comic book movies with my Dad too. This past Friday I was thinking it would be fun to fly out and see my Dad and watch the Avengers together, later that night my brother (who lives out of town) surprised me with a phone call saying I should get out of work early and go see Avengers with him. I was okay with seeing it twice and it was fun to see the movie with my brother :) . I still want to see it with my Dad too though and may be able to later this month so that’ll be awesome!

  5. NicktheStick says:

Sweet! I didn’t think you guys would get to this so quickly. Also Jon I hope you know I was just bugging you about the research. Anyways, I liked the show, definitely going to check out some of those web comics that you mentioned. There are not too many that I read, mostly just things that people post on here, but I was introduced to Hark a Vagrant before and this is one of my favorites: http://harkavagrant.com/index.php?id=295

As for manga, I totally get what you mean by being quick and sometimes expensive. To counter that argument, I was say go and read Death Note. I still need to get the last two black volume editions. But those are so detailed (as Jose has mentioned before) and the story is amazing. Though for the most part I am in the same boat as you with just not being able to afford to buy them… but I am thinking of dropping more of my DC titles and focusing on indies and manga.

Tom I am curious to the Monster manga you mentioned. What is the story about and why did it make you have goosebumps? I always am curious on why stories make people feel a certain way to see if I will have a similar reaction.

Anyways, great show as usual! Can’t wait for the next one.

    • comicbookdude89 says:

I think you just need to read Monster without knowing anything (or little) about it. It is pretty creepy and really well done. I’ve only read the first volume, but I really enjoyed it. And yeah I have a lot of Manga on my ‘To Buy’ list but i don’t have much money… :(

  6. Sergeant says:

Tom you touched several times on what you are willing to pay for comics. Next episode could you expand that on yours and Jon’s thoughts on what you are willing to pay, where and why. I am interested in most people’s thoughts on what is our moral responsibilty on supporting comic shops, comic producers, artists, writers? You started to get on this with Kirby and Moore. But with Free comic book day coming. What is our place as consumers?

    • Excellent Topic! We will certainly expand on that (I’ll see if we can get it on this week’s episode since we’re filming Saturday after Free Comic Book Day) -Jon (of aCBL – on Tom’s computer before going to see the Avengers!)

Very cool show! I like the diversity of topics!

    • Jon (of aCBL) says:

Thanks Ed :) ! We just keep on rolling along – and rest assured: we are totally loving the fact that the show is nearing a one year anniversary – how cool is that? And you’ve been with us the whole time :) – rockstar!
