Would it have killed Marvel to get Mike Zeck to do that Journey into Mystery variant? In fact, why didn’t they get all of the Spidey artists that are still around to contribute variant homages to their own eras? Assholes.

That would have been awesome. Seeing Zeck’s pencils in the back of the trade of that story was almost as awesome as the story itself. Which reminds me I really need to get that trade back from my friend…

  2. So all we get for the 50th Anniversary of Spider-Man are a couple random variants and a Bendis mini that I’m not gonna read? Yay.

    Mike Zeck rules.

Best? I zombie. Allred could do a doodle on a piece of toilet paper and it’d look fantastic. Dial H and Darwyn Cooke’s Minutemen cover, and the scratchy GI Joe cover are pretty nice too.

Worst? Detective Comics. Tony Daniel. I swear he, Liefeld and David Finch take everything bad about nineties Jim Lee and multiply it tenfold. He does that ridiculous grimacy face on everyone Finch also favours.

And speaking of Jim Lee, that Minutemen variant is atrocious. Silk Spectre’s chin is about three inches long, and it’s just a mess of shitty lines. And it looks like something from the early nineties. Just compositionally lazy.

    Horrible
    Action Comics – Variant
    Defenders
    Detective

    Ones I kind of liked
Spawn – Savage Spawn and YoungBlood variants

Some weeks there is a great selection of cover and this is not one of those weeks. I’m struggling to find one cover I like, maybe the Journey into Mystery (non-variant) cover.

Speaking of variants I hate it when Marvel does that thing of putting unrelated characters on a book because they have a movie out. I remember when the Wolverine movie was out my retailer at the time sent me a couple of books with Wolverine on the cover and he wasn’t in the book. After that I told my retailer to always send me the regular cover, having a character on the front cover thats completely unrelated to the book is completely and utterly pointless.
