Very Fun, fun, fun! It was cool to see Skyler on camera! I get the feeling he isn’t as big of a drinker as Tom and Jon?

I haven’t seen this animated feature yet, but I probably will when it comes to Redbox. I have read the “What’s So Funny About Truth Justice and The American Way?” story in Action Comics that it’s based on, tho. I wonder if the problems that you guys had with the bad guys here might stem from the fact that the Elite were supposed to be a loose parody of the Authority? You know, they weren’t really characters in their own right as much as they were representative of a certain trend and now that trend has kinda(?) died off, so they sorta lose something?

Also, you guys said that Manchester Black was chewing on a match stick?? That’s interesting cuz in the comic he was clearly smoking cigarettes. But they still have drinking in the film? In a way I can see them toning it down a bit cuz there’s going be some parent who are are like, “Hey, a Superman cartoon! I’ll get this for the kids!” On the other hand, what’s the message here, that lung cancer is bad, but liver disease is ok?

Also, I think you might have mentioned it in the past, but exactly how old is your oldest daughter, Tom? I send my younger relatives comics, but there’s some mainstream Marvel and DC stuff I won’t give them. These are ppl who are like 10-12 years old. Are there superhero comics you think might not be appropriate? Are there general audience TV shows (not kid or family shows) that you watch with her? I mean like prime time stuff…

Anyway, cool show guys. Looking forward to the relaunch that you’re obligated to do after the anniversary show, you’ll have to wear different clothes with high collars. (joking!)

I haven’t read the whole comment yet, Skyler drinks just as much as us. It’s a mid-west thing, we all drink.

My oldest Daughter(Mayble) is 6 years old. It may be shocking to some people out there that I let her read most comics and watch most movies that she wants.

But I’m a part of the camp that thinks that separating whats real and whats not is very important, and understanding what entertainment is also important. Knowing right from wrong is very clear. We have a home that’s full of love, positive energy, family and friends, my wife won’t even let anyone in our home use the word “hate” when she is around, she calls it the H-Word. So it’s very clear when Mayble see’s violence or something scary, or a bad word, that those things aren’t apart of her world.

And while I would read most comics I own with my daughter, she wouldn’t want to sit through them unless they are entertaining to her (tiny titans/ strawberry shortcake).
As for TV show’s, she doesn’t like live action tv, unless it’s strictly for kids(Fetch with Ruff Ruffman),or about animals(Shark Week, Discovery or Animal Planet shows)…..or American Pickers. She does love all Super Hero TV shows though, Batman Brave and the Bold, WordGirl, and Ultimate Spider-Man are her favorites. Her favorite movies are Ghost-busters, Jurassic Park, and The Incredibles.

I guess what I’m kind of getting at is that since we don’t make a big deal over what she can’t watch, it’s not like some forbidden fruit that she must have. She only asks to watch or read what’s relevant to her 6-year-old-world.

I would be interested in hearing which Marvel or DC comics you wouldn’t want a 12 year old read. I would let any 10-12 year old read any marvel or DC produced Comic Book. At that age you know what sex is, you have heard every bad word in the world, you have seen plenty of violence, A Comic Book/TV Show/Film isn’t going to ruin you (IMO), it’s only going to expand your knowledge of what is out there.

Again, thanks for watching ed and always promoting great discussions.

There’s no one title that I think is consistently over the line. It’s more a case by case basis.I’ll get them piles of random comics and occasionally there might be something in there that makes me go “Hmm…”

It’s hard to explain but a lot of the time it’s more how something is portrayed than if it’s just explicit. Not that I had plans on getting it for anyone, but something like ear biting Catwoman is something I wouldn’t give to a kid. A lot of stuff falls into a grey area for me, tho.

A “grey area” example would be that issue of Secret Avengers where Black Widow confronts a tabloid website about Bucky’s death/life. I actually liked the story. It was basically a debate about the temporary deaths of superheroes. HOWEVER, in almost every other page Natasha is drawn with her shirt unzipped to just below her cleavage. There’s no nudity and no sex scene or anything, but she’s running around with her shirt half open? I get it, she looks “hawt”. Ok, I’m fine with that. But material that blatantly panders to my adult male libido, I’m not sure it’s appropriate to share with 11yr old boys or a 10yr old girl. It wasn’t explicit, but it gave me pause.

If it’s not too relentless, or if I think there’s something else in the comic that I think balances out what’s questionable, a lot of times I’ll let it slide.
