7 Minutes of Terror – The Curiosity Rover Has Landed on Mars! [VIDEO]

While tens of millions were watching the Olympics last night, I was tracking the car-sized Curiosity– the latest Mars Land Rover.

Congratulations, NASA.

(By the way, the Mars Rover Opportunity– which scientists hoped would work for 90 Martian Days, is still operating… 8 YEARS later.)

You know, if Sony’s movie studio had any fucking brains they could try to use this news in order to promote their shit Total Recall remake which got it’s ass kicked this weekend. On a similar note, this video would have been a little cooler if they had Gov. Arnold saying “Get your ass to Mars!” in it somewhere.

I am also not surprised by the lack of excitement created by this news. It seems that Americans are more interested in their douchebag Olympic swimmers than they are about a mission to Mars.

I always thought the runners were bigger douchebags than the swimmers.

Jesus, I had no clue (I really don’t watch or keep up with the Olympics, just catch highlights of which teams are doing well) but what the fuck???

Phelps & Douglas (both great athletes) can work as hard as they want but in reality it only takes one ridiculous fool to ruin a team’s reputation. Lochte, you are that fool. I kinda wish I didn’t see that list, for once (in a very long time) I had pride in my country’s players ><

        • Insideman says:

There are exceptions to every generalization. I’ve never liked Ryan Lochte– or for that matter– Michael Phelps (that much). I was talking about a general attitude.

Almost all the runners seem to be running simply to hit the ATM… At least there are a few swimmers who seem to be in it for the sport.

Of course, they all expect to cash in when they win.

That’s the problem with generalizations. ;)

I’ve always found the women athletes and events more competitive and enjoyable. That’s all I have watched this year as far as the Olympics are concerned. The Women’s US vs Canada soccer match that just ended has easily been the best thing so far.

I was all over this news, so cool.

On a side note Phelps is the fuckin’ man.

This reply was supposed to be at the bottom. sorry guys. didn’t mean to steal the thread.

I should temper what I wrote above. I think Phelps is the “fuckin man” as well. There is no doubting/questioning his unbelievable accomplishments. I am actually in awe of anyone that can do stuff like Phelps– no matter what country they hail from. As usual, Jose wrote what I was thinking: For some reason, most of the female athletes just seem to approach their events/sports with a different philosophy than the men. I don’t know why I think that… Maybe because of advertisers and Madison Avenue ad agencies?

Plus, it probably didn’t help that I had just read a scathing article about the use of “pro” athletes in the Olympics… Or I had just read that Michael Phelps took a $400,000 bath on a condo he just sold– after only buying it 3 years ago for $1.6 Million.

Of course, it’s not all/only male athletes that act that way, either. I forget her name but I distinctly remember a woman on the US Ski Team at the last Winter Olympics that rubbed me the wrong way… A lot.

The dutch womens hockey team has certainly gathered a following over the last few days.

Irish hopes mostly rest with boxer Katie Taylor, 4 times world amateur champion at the 60kg class, it could be our first gold medal in something like 20 years.

              • Insideman says:

I can’t help but believe the international coverage is much better than the treacle NBC continues to feed US viewers. All I wanted to do was watch some weight-lifting competitions. I have been following NBC’s supposedly up to date schedule on the internet… And I have taped 7 weightlifting competitions. I have only seen parts of three– despite checking every day for changes… As many events are not being shown as scheduled.

That sucks. NASA can land a rover on Mars 8 months after liftoff– within a few minute time window… But NBC can’t reliably tell me when they will air certain events on a day to day basis– when I check every day.

                • Locusmortis says:

I watch the BBC coverage and its excellent. There is sport pretty much constantly on BBC 2 and 3 plus every sport is available on a live feed on the red button. Do NBC not have extra cable channels or anything? I know this might sound strange but it sounds like a really backward system in the US when it comes to Olympics coverage.

                  • Insideman says:

They’ve got tons of ancillary channels… And those are the ones that are not showing the events as scheduled. I have no idea why. :)

I think its great news. Nice to finally see NASA doing something, even though the ESA (European Space Agency) is a far bit ahead with its planned trip to Ganymede, and subsequently, Europa (the Moons of Jupiter).

I liked the Irish coverage of the Olympic sailing…
