Yup, saw this the other day. Burton’s rap was great.
I was just checking out the Things We Like section and it got me wondering, are there any plans to add Manga to the Capsule Review Thread? Or making manga it’s own column?
I’d like to but I already ramble on way to much about a 22 page comic in my reviews as it is. I don’t know if people could handle a review from me for a comic that is hundreds of pages long.
I know I couldn’t.
I’ve covered some manga titles like Cross Game/5 Centimeters per Second/Bakuman in my random fandom column and its an area I may revisit but regular manga reviews would be beyond the scope of my abilities, you’d need a proper expert in the area for that. Jose would be the obvious choice but if he can’t then perhaps you should headhunt a manga/anime specialist, its certainly a column I’d love to see.

Can anyone else confirm what i just read in this article? Is this real? Are there really people alive who can think such outlandish thoughts?
Unfortunately it is real. It was on the news here last night.
So The Walking Dead decided to become a real zombie show this season, it’s about time.
But in all honesty the first two episode are leaps better than anything we’ve seen yet.
Well, they’re certainly following the comic more closely (in most ways). I figure they’re turning Herschel into the the TV version of Dale in the comic.
I also think in the last ep they purposefully dragged out ONE (Prison Guard) ZOMBIE at the beginning to make fans go, “We’re back to ONE ZOMBIE again!” Then piled the others on to prove they heard our complaints.
I’m most concerned to see the scenes with the Governor, I hope they don’t drag… Since I think it’s WAY TO EARLY to introduce him.
I’m not too concerned about introducing the Governor, I like the direction of the last two episodes, I like that things are happening. I watched the crew sit at a farm with no zombie’s for a whole season, so jumping ahead and having these characters be more comfortable in this zombie apocalypse setting really pushes the series forward. Its cool that they aren’t afraid to keep it faster paced with more things happening, and I think the Governor will be a good catalyst to keep the story lines moving….. at least I hope so.
That last episode made me finally want to go back and read the comic. I was stuck at issue 54ish and after last night’s watching of the episode, I am now up to issue 78. Why it took me so long to get back into it I don’t know, but I’m enjoying both immensely.
I just got Habibi from the library, can’t wait to read the whole thing. Has anybody else read it? I’m sure it can’t be as good as Blankets, but I’m only 30 pages into it and am already really enjoying it.
I read it and thought it was good. I didn’t enjoy it as much as Blankets but it’s a solid read.
***REMEMBER TO ENTER THE 2012 HALLOWEEN AVATAR CONTEST***
We can hear your computers clicking away on Photoshop! Jose and I will be unveiling our own HORRIFYING AVATARS very soon! We can’t wait to see what YOU’VE thought up!
So, gang, “Superman: Earth One: Vol.2″ is going to be released soon.
Since Vol.1 was the most awful thing my eyes have ever seen in my entire life (after, of course, the disgutingly horrendous “Batman: Earth One” by Geoff I_hate_fanboys Johns), I just CAN’T BELIEVE they’re putting a sequel out of this universe.
Any thought about this? I am the only one who is praying God to forgive us for this Vol.2? Is this the first sign of the End of the World?
Vol 1 sold really well, even if it was garbage. Money rules all in this world…. and that’s pretty lame.
Helmir, Our problems for Vol 1 was well documented at the time. But as Tom said, it was a (surprise) hit for DC. Made them LOTS of money.
The good news, as JMS gets more and more into his new TV & Movie venture, I doubt he’ll have too much time to screw with Superman anymore.
Thank Heaven! Ya know, when you start into comics, you always have some gems that highlight your way into this medium and make you like it forever (I, personally, am not really original, since my personal gems are Watchmen, From Hell, and probably The Return of Bruce Wayne (this one for some weird reasons)).
Well, JMS was the one who also made me discover that BAD COMICS existed. Yup. He was my very personal first POS and let me tell you, it was like a good ol’ slap to find it could existed.
So I have a personal vendetta with this man
. But again, Geoff Johns too deserves some heavy trial in front of the Hague Court for Batman Earth One…
Helmir,
You got some great comics to point to when you talk about the books you read when first entering the hobby. Everybody’s gotta start somewhere. I don’t even remember the first comic I read. (Wish I did!)
You’re right, JMS has written some very, very bad comics. Still, in the scheme of bad creators/writers, he is far surpassed by Mark Millar, Jeph Loeb, Brian Michael Bendis, Rob Liefeld, Dan Slott, Todd McFarlane and many others. (Even several of the guys I just mentioned– except for McFarlane and Liefeld– have written a few good comics.)
JMS also has a tendency to sometimes blame others (or various circumstances)– if he releases a book that’s poorly received. But here’s a JMS comic that I suspect you will absolutely LOVE… It’s a book called Midnight Nation. JMS wrote it years ago for Top Cow. (I am also a big fan of his Supreme Power Vol 1 Contact, Vol 2 Powers & Principalities and Vol 3 High Command– all comics collected in Trades and Hardcovers that JMS wrote for Marvel.)
In all instances, these books are geared toward Adults 18 and over. If you haven’t read them, you might want to give them a chance. Midnight Nation (not a superhero book) especially.
And welcome to IMJ! Please feel free to comment anytime!
Thanks! I really enjoy this website. I discovered it recently and it’s a bowl of fresh air compared to the over-hyped other places you can find on the internet.
It’s not been such a long time I’ve been into comics (2 years) but since I’m passionate by nature I read my fair share of books during that time. But I don’t know every aspects of each creator. To me, Millar rhymes with “Superman: Red Son”, which fucking blew my head off. Jeph Loeb definitely lost himself, but he still gave me “The Long Halloween” and “Dark Victory”, so I forgive him for any horror he can shit now (the lost of his son in an accident maybe changed his writing and his approach to writing much more than he thinks, too). And about Rob Liefeld… Well… He basically embodies everything that was and is wrong in comics. I want to believe he isn’t totally a tool, since he gave us Image, but I know for sure as a creator, he is the worst.
Anyway, so my point is: I don’t know all aspects of JMS. I’ll go buy through Amazon Midnight Nation. As for the others, I’ll probably check them some day, but I’ve NEVER bought any Marvel Comics… Not to sound arrogant, but I’ve never been drawn to the universe of this company, and reading about their current price policy and all doesn’t make me want to! I so much damn prefer my DC, Vertigo and Image. When I’ll have more money, maybe I’ll indulge myself into some Marvel
Anyway, thanks for the Midnight Nation tip! =)
Helmir,
Grant Morrison seems to think he wrote most of Superman Red Son (or, at least gave Millar lots of pointers).
I totally understand your points about Loeb (that’s why I said, these guys “have written a few good comics”.) I can also fully understand the horror of his son dying. I lost my brother when I was a kid (he was 3 years older than me) and my parents said it was absolutely the worst thing that could ever happen to a parent.
The JMS “Marvel” books I recommended are really adult-oriented Marvel MAX books. They are also from several years ago. (Pre-Disney.) They have no real relation to Marvel Comics in general. It was JMS taking old characters (Squadron Supreme) and totally rebooting them– making them his own. It is very adult and very intelligent (it’s probably what a Vertigo superhero comic would read like). Like The Boys– but without all the swearing.
Gary Frank’s art is killer on the JMS books too. (He’s also the artist on Midnight Nation.)
I totally get not buying Marvel Comics. (I think we all do to varying degrees here.)
Huge Vertigo fan here too. (So is Tom Devine of aCBL.) I am almost completely certain I’ve read every single Vertigo comic in some form… Even the really atrocious ones. I just hyped Peter Milligan’s current run on Hellblazer in my latest Insideman’s Pull List today!
Glad you like the site!
Insideman,
Okay, now I’m definitely going to check Supreme Power! I can’t say my wallet wants to thank you
On a quick sidenote, I just want to express I’m really sorry to hear about your lost brother. Even if it happened a long time ago, it saddens me.
I saw your excellent Insideman’s Pull list. I, too, was wondering how hard it can get to be smart and entertaining every coming week… Nice meta-comment you did there.
Can’t wait to read the Capsule Review now
!
See ya in the threads!
Thanks for the kind words, Helmir.
I think you’ll enjoy those books, I really do.

It does seem that all I want to talk about is “Homeland,” but if you’ve seen the show you’d understand why. For anyone who has seen the latest episode…WOW! I did not see that ending. I thought they would actually do that later on in the season maybe around 9 or 10 in the 12 episode season, but 4? The writers must be in it for the long haul, maybe for around 4-5 seasons, if their going to write for something as big as that to happen in early season 2. If the writing remains at this quality I’m all for it.
P.S. The last scene with Nick and Carrie in his hotel room was amazing. Amazing acting all around.
The story this season is moving pretty quick. The writer’s aren’t fucking around. I now have no idea what the show has planned for the second half of the season. And, ya, that last season scene was awesome. Man, Danes is so good on there. She plays the character perfectly. You never know when Carrie is going to crack.
It was announced today that the show got picked up for a third season.
Fuck ya!

Never saw the movie, just because I was pissed at the Wachowski siblings(doesn’t have the same ring as the Wachowski Brothers) for the horrible last two Matrix movies.
I really should check the movie out, Speed Racer was one of my fav animation shows back in the day, but if I do watch it, it better have some of this in it!
The film on blu ray is the AMAZING in HD. Easily the best looking blu ray I own.
Speed Racer is bomb, I’ve watched it at least 15 times, but what movie with John Goodman isn’t great. And I liked the the second Matrix movie.
I liked the second Matrix movie too. Third one was balls though.
Oh ya just complete nonsense, but I’m looking forward to Cloud Atlas, I hope it’s good.
Lana Wachowski’s HRC speech was beautiful.
Agreed. I saw it earlier in the evening.
Yes, when I saw this on Blu-ray the second time around it was a joy. I had such a bad movie going experience when I went to see it in theaters it was hard for me to dissociate that from the movie. Fucking Morlocks. Anyway, of course it has all that its the Mack fucking 5. The best promotional piece I have ever read was for the Speed Racer movie when Road & Track did a fake review of the Mack 5. Fun stuff.
Thank you for posting this.
Because he is my hero, this is another interview with Eric Stephenson.

Beer + Youtube= crazy good times(for me anyway)
Alright so I’m curious who out there in the Nation is iPhone guys and who is Android (specifically Galaxy S III)? I ask because at work (I currently sell cell phones) our Samsung rep gave me a S III to try out for a month. I was previously using an iPhone 4. I have only had the phone for a day and still not sure what to think. There are some pretty cool options on the S III, but I think I still might be a proud Apple guy. Anyways, I was just wanting to hear what other thought, since the people I work with are Android people and (jokingly) make fun of my iPhone.
I just got an iPhone a few months ago. I like it because I’m a Mac guy, I prefer Apple hardware, so I know the product and how I’m going to use it before I buy it since I’ve been using Apple computers since OS 7 or 8, I can’t remember.
But I’m not the kind of guy that really cares. In fact, if I thought I could be a writer with out a smart phone, I wouldn’t have even gotten an iPhone. I don’t call people and everything I can do with it I most do on my regular computer. But when I go away from my house, especially long trips like Vegas or my upcoming trip to Anthocon in a few weeks, it’s invaluable since I don’t need to bring a computer with me, or iPad if I don’t plan n writing anything more than FB update and tweets.
On the other hand I can’t stand Apple and most of their overpriced products. I’ve got a Galaxy SII and it does what I need it to do and it cost about half of what the equivalent Iphone did on my contract plus I don’t have a shit attack like most of my Iphone friends do whenever there is an OS update. When my current contract is up next year I’ll probably get an S4.
See, I think this really just comes down to personal experience, but I never have problems with my Apple hardware or software, but I had consistent problems working with PCs.
LM is a long time Apple “can’t stander”… And I am a long time Apple booster.
I have used and trusted my Apple products for years. I won’t buy any more Samsung products– specifically because they have been ripping off Apple so blatantly. That said, I don’t own an iPhone.
I only use a cell for dire emergencies. The only time I can escape is when I walk out the door and get off the grid. I cherish those moments.
Yeah, I personally hate cellphones. Growing up in NH where you can get caught in a blizzard and have to figure out out to stay alive before cellphones were common has jaded me. So, besides one person I call everyday, i only use my cell for emergencies and I will probably be one of a handful of people that will still have a landline no matter what. One of fewer that will make sure it copper wire and not fiber optic since you don’t need to power copper lines and they’ve worked pretty well for 150 years.
Don’t forget the third option, not having either. Just think of all the money you will save with a crappy five year old flip phone with not data package…
But in all seriousness, most of my coworker seem to be sporting Android phones these days, and when asked, my 14 year old has informed me that iPhones are now for “old people’, whatever that is suppose to mean.
Yeah, like I said, I only got it since I saw how much easier it helped out other writer friends be able to do everything they needed business wise, otherwise I would have kept my flip phone till I died. It is purely a business investment and you’ll rarely see me just looking at it like so many techo-zombies out there.
I will say the new Verizon share anything plan that I upgraded to actually cost only $20 more than what I was already paying for just unlimited text and 250 minutes, so the upgrade didn’t cost me as much as it would have if I switched earlier. So I can’t complain about the price this time around.
Yeah. I have a flip phone. Emergencies only. Otherwise, I barely turn it on.

So now I’m going to watch Shaun of the Dead today.
On this day in 1977 Meat Loaf’s Bat Out Of Hell album was released. This is geek related because the cover was by popular fantasy and horror artist Richard Corben. Corben is probably best known for his Creepy and Eerie work. Also, if you’ve seen the animated Heavy Metal film from 1981, the “Den” segment was based on his work.http://checkthisart.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/100_1697.jpg
