Enjoy that Superman, Ian. Gil Kane was a Real Artist. Not like these porn-tracing whippersnappers today.

Morlock, I had the opportunity to meet Gil at dinner one night– a couple of years before he died. It was a fairly impromptu last minute invite at San Diego Comic Con… An Editor invited me to come along. I think the exact invite was, “Hey Kid! Why don’t you come to dinner with us? I got somebody I know you’ll want to meet.”

When Kane walked up, I think my jaw hit the table. Impeccably dressed, very cordial. I can even tell you what he was wearing. A Navy Blue Sport Coat with a blue and white striped dress shirt.

The fact that I was brought along so the “old timers” could have fun with me has never bothered me one second. The “old guys” in comics were very much a “Boy’s Club” and certain rites of initiation had to be endured. They knew how much I loved comics– and my fave artist then (and even now) was Gil Kane (with John Romita Sr a veryclose second). So the invite was an honor.

I think the joke that got the biggest laugh that evening was, “Kid! Stop staring at Gil! You’re not on a date!”

Since I don’t really bother to read Previews from cover to cover anymore– I didn’t even know this book was coming out. It’s already sitting in my permanent collection. That one’s not going anywhere until I die.

I would almost kill to have DC re-release their Gil Kane library with some consummate color artist like Dave Stewart recoloring the pages. Holy Jeezus!

      • Locusmortis says:

Why bother reading Previews when you have me to do that for you :P

I checked my past columns and I did Gil Kanes IDW artists edition ;)

        • Insideman says:

I was going to say that– but that would have sounded more than a little cheeky coming out of my mouth. ;)

I’ve bought every IDW Artist Edition except Sergio Aragones’ book and the Wally Wood edition (which I actually thought I had purchased but apparently didn’t). Gil’s was a no brainer– even if they did just seem to raise the price by $25 rather arbitrarily.

Animal Man is a great pick.

    • Insideman says:

There are a few New52 books I am looking forward to. I didn’t much care for Animal Man #1… But it was a first issue. I am going to let two or three volumes pile up– so I can go from the beginning– through this supposed mess that is Rotworld– in a couple of days.

Superman & Spiderman by Gil Kane…that should make any week a good one

    • Insideman says:

Joe, I almost didn’t even take the Spider-Man Artist Edition out of the box… But since I like to at least inspect my $125 comics… I thought, “Why not photograph it?” You can bet I checked and double checked that stack as I was building it.

No way that Gil Kane gem was gonna fall on the floor. ;)

How much did you pay for the Gil Kane Spider-Man Artist Edition? IDW didnt give a suggested retail price..my LCS had to pay 110 so I paid 135 for it..which was more then I thought it would be.

Good looking stack..The cover for Eros gone Wild looks HOT…I am not sure about the stories..I feel like I can rack up the original stories for half the price this collection costs…( :-) I am not crusading against humanoids or anything..he)

The Kirby Genesis spin-offs, Captain Victory and Silver Star could have been left out, IMO..did you like the Kirby Genesis series?

    • Insideman says:

I got the Gil Kane Artist Edition for cover price– $125 USD.

Eros Gone Wild was a real crap shoot for me. I like adult comics but I had no idea whether I would like the comics within. I just based my judgment on the great cover and the fact that I like how Humanoids makes their books– and the quality they usually choose to print. Even with that, the book was in and out of my cart 4 times before I finally decided to splurge. (Which I guess, once again, blows the theory that I just purchase my books indiscriminately and buy everything that’s released every week.)

But I do have a problem with their pricing. The cost of the book was outrageous, even with my generous discount. (Amazon US is selling it at 37% off.) At $89.95 USD, I am certain you probably could find the comics cheaper… Especially since you are a helluva closer to their cities of origin than I am. :D

I am just now reading the current Kirby Genesis series. What I read the other day certainly wasn’t bad. In fact, it was good. I’ll follow up on them all when I finish them.

      • When you say cover price you mean there is a price on the cover right? :-P

        • Insideman says:

I wish that was the cover priced. Pardon me, that was a very “Western” way of putting it.

Price for the book was $125. I paid $125… I thought… But I actually got a 5% discount… So it was $118.75 US. Given exchange rates and shipping, etc… $135 USD sounds like a good deal for you. Although I wonder if you would benefit from a service like Locusmortis uses.

I guess that would all depend on what taxes/duties they have in your country (if any) for incoming purchases and whether you just HAVE to touch stuff or see it before you buy. I sort of like NOT seeing my stuff before I get it. Gives me a sense of wonder and anticipation as I open my boxes.

Of course, I also get burned when I get digest-sized stuff I paid good money for that I didn’t know were digest-sized (you might remember that I hate “regular” comic trades and hardcovers that are digest-sized or not marked as such)… But that’s fairly rare nowadays.

I actually haven’t been in a comic book store since I went into a store that called itself a “comic shop” but really wasn’t. It was just a nerd-cave in Jackson Hole, Wy that carried a few new comics and that was it. (I think somebody had a rich Daddy that pushed their kid to get a “job”.) That was 4 years ago. Really haven’t missed them since. :D

          • Locusmortis says:

Hmmm someone mention my name :P

I just checked the service I use and the John Byrne Fantastic Four: Artists Edition is currently on offer for $93.75
