Insideman’s Pull List™ Hardcover, Graphic Novel & Manga Picks for 11.9.11 & 11.16.11

Sorry about the sporadic Insideman Pull List posts as of late. Not my intention. Things have been hectic at IMJ HQ (to say the least) and a lot of a behind the scenes details caused things on the front line to falter a bit.

But that’s over. Expect Inveterate Media Junkies to bounce back BIGGER and BETTER than ever (after all, we NEVER went anywhere– just took a few days away)… With some VERY exciting news coming around the corner. And for those wondering: I have indeed changed my comic book, graphic novel, hardcover & manga provider. Who?!? Well, that I won’t say (for now)– as it truly makes sense to reveal as part of a MUCH BIGGER ANNOUNCEMENT a little further down the road.

Regardless, the change was effected with no fuss and I am extremely happy… Which is an emotion we could all use a BIG DOSE of right now.

Writer: Daisuke Sato, Artist: Shouji Sato

Jose first exposed me to this show. Loved it. Then the manga came out and I loved it. It’s a damn good thing that I loved it because, after purchasing the Blu Ray of the anime, then faithfully purchasing the Manga– I was fairly pissed to discover that this over-sized FULL COLOR hardcover was also going to be released. As Jose said when we discussed it, I most likely would have also saved my cash and not purchased the regular manga volumes HAD I KNOWN this edition was going to be released. But the book is creative & the story fun– so I don’t harbor any real ill will.

I should caution that this new High School of the Dead Color Omnibus looks to be on the cusp of a “new wave” in Manga publishing. More and more manga series look like they are going to also be released in suped-up color versions. If publishers are contemplating giving this color treatment to manga that’s been around for a while, I applaud the various companies for finally wising-up and figuring out how to broaden their appeal to the people who simply REFUSE to buy BLACK & WHITE comics– any black and white comics. But (and it’s a BIG “but”) if they are planning on releasing lots of their NEWER series in the traditional black & white Manga format… With the full intention of then releasing previously UNANNOUNCED over-sized color editions later… I am going to be one unhappy manga fan. I do not like buying three of four versions of the SAME THING. I thankfully outgrew that completist obsession a while ago.

Writer/Art: Carl Barks

It has only taken forever but I recently decided to indulge my inner Carl Barks and Don Rosa Donald Duck fan. Boom! is releasing some great Rosa Donald Duck volumes… And here comes this absolutely wonderful hardcover Barks Donald Duck collection from Fantagraphics. No kickbacks from either company for the mentions, I assure you. Recently I’ve been noting that many of the smaller publishers are expertly redefining themselves in this sluggish comic book market… And their output is becoming SMARTER and BETTER. It is fast becoming fact that certain companies– Boom!, Fantagraphics, Top Shelf, Oni Press, etc.– just aren’t releasing any crappy comics… A phenomenon I promise to explore very soon on this site.

Writer/Art: Todd McFarlane

Seriously, I wouldn’t buy this with YOUR money.

While McFarlane long ago professed to possess a kinship for Spider-man… You will not find it this collection. McFarlane’s self-penned tales are the EXACT ANTITHESIS to the fun, exciting stories the penciler created with masterful mainstream comic book writer David Michelinie in their previous Spider-man comic run. (Just reprinted in the most recent Amazing Spider-Man Omnibus.)

McFarlane’s plots are clunky messes– the dialogue even WORSE… Despite his heavy use of reliable, time-tested Spider-man villains. Over the years, I have seen more than one artist-turned-writer punctuate his stint on a comic by overusing a hero’s Rogues Gallery. (David Finch or Tony “S” Daniel on the various Batman disasters, anyone?) It’s comic book writing shorthand– as familiar characters really need NO character development… Primarily since more talented writers have already done all the “heavy lifting”– making the villains into three-dimensional beings decades ago.

In short, McFarlane’s shitty Spider-man storytelling makes some of the creator’s newer Spawn stories seem like award winners. (Although, truth be told– most of his Spawn stuff sucks hard too.)

  1. M. Fewko says:

That HIGH SCHOOL OF THE DEAD color edition looks good. I haven’t tried the manga yet, only the anime.

Here’s to hoping for an OVA!

  2. NicktheStick says:

Ha. I totally agree that Torment is horrible. It is actually one of the worst things I have ever read. About half way through reading that trade I almost stopped, and now while I wish I would have, I had to force myself to continue to read and finish that book. While I had that book recommended to me by a McFarlane lover I would never be able to recommend that book to anyone… not even my enemies.

  3. hackslash2020 says:

Is Torment the story with the Lizard where the entire story is covered in “boom-booms”…. gotta be the worst spidey story I’ve read and the worst idea of suspense building into a comic…

Thanks for the heads up on Higschool of the Dead…2 minutes into the article and I already ordered it online…I want it soo bad…I thought the single volumes where pretty expensive..like $13 while the book looks smaller/thinner then for instance 20th century boys..one of the reasons I still hadnt pick the books up..

I am currently reading Echo by Terry Moore and the Book of Human Insects..both are great books, another big book thats waiting for me is Spud the disposable assassin. Makes me wonder why I still buy shitty floppies….but Catwoman is HOT though XD

    • Insideman says:

The individual High School of the Dead manga are physically smaller than 20th Century Boys volumes.

The omnibus is over-sized– and as Jose clarified to me earlier today: has the original color from the Japanese creator and publisher.

Echo is also a great book.

      • Locusmortis says:

I considered ordering the HSOTTD hardcover but since I’d already gotten the original tankobon I didn’t bother, something being in black and white dosen’t bother me. Speaking of b&w, Charley’s War is easily the best book on the lists you posted.

In the current previews, 2 trades caught my eye, Johnny Red Volume 2 from Titan and Is That All There Is? by Joost Swarte from Fantagraphics, quality stuff.

  4. Tiger Topher says:

I’m going to give High School of the Dead a chance based on all the good things I’ve heard about it here. Which would you guys say is better, though, the anime or the manga?
