Locusmortis’ PREVIEWS Hits & Misses™ – Rating Comic Shop Offerings for July/August 2012

Every month I pre-order comics, trades and other related items from Previews magazine. Even though there is information online for just about everything, I still find the Previews catalog to be the simplest thing to scan through to get some inspiration on what to buy.

I used to write a Previews column for the old CCW site. Recently Insideman left some heavy hints (heavy like a lead anvil) that I should restart the column. The following items are things that caught my eye and my fancy. Your tastes may differ– so if you buy something and I hate it… Don’t blame me. I did my best to warn you!

The STATUS in the description of each product indicates the likelihood of whether I’m going to order it ranging from Firm Order as the most likely to POS (Piece of Shit)– with everything else being somewhere in between. I’m sure you can figure it out!

The Crimson Empire Saga HC
504 pages

Status – Firm Order

Additional Notes – Despite the movie prequels, I still like the Star Wars Universe. I also like the look of the creative teams on this… Plus I have a hankering for some Star Wars stories at the moment.

Eerie Archives Volume 11 HC
248 pages

Status – Firm Order

Additional NotesEsteban Maroto is one of the artists featured in this hardcover collection. That, by itself, makes it worth getting– not to mention art by Neal Adams, Paul Neary, Sanjulian and others.

Oreimo Volume 1 TP
200 pages

Status – Tentative Order

Additional Notes – Japanese wacky hi-jinks manga? I’m in, for the first volume or two at least.

The Savage Hawkman #11
32 pages

Status – Probable POS

Additional Notes – Awful cover by Rob Liefeld… Though he did attempt to draw Hawkman’s feet this time! The Judas Coin Original GN
96 pages

Status – Firm Order

Additional Notes – Shame on DC for hiding this book in the ass-end of the DC section of Previews. This is written and drawn by Walt “Fuckin'” Simonson and it’s going to be a beaut!Punk Rock Jesus #1
32 pages

Status – Trade Waiting

Additional Notes –  A Vertigo book written and drawn by Sean Murphy… This comic looks interesting… But I’m going to wait for the trade on this one.Neal Adams Thrill Kill: Artists Edition Portfolio
8 prints

Status – Undecided

Additional Notes – I have several art portfolios by the likes of Luis Royo, Victoria Frances and Chris Ware, so I like the format… But instead of prints of covers or paintings, IDW is issuing a Neal Adams 8 page story from Creepy Magazine in over-sized print form. I’m just not convinced by this as a concept. Others may like it but I don’t think its for me.Debris #1 of 4
32 pages

Status – Firm Order

Additional Notes – I’m trying to switch from buying individual comic books to purchasing trades… But with Image, it’s hard to know if some comics will be collected. I really like Riley Rossmo’s art and I reckon this could be an excellent dystopian sci-fi mini-series. Also note that Rossmo has a 64 page one-shot called Wild Children coming from Image this month. The art for that book looks brilliant as well.Rachel Rising #10
24 pages

Status – Trade Waiting

Additional NotesTerry Moore’s Echo is one of my favourite comics of the last few years. In hindsight, I kind of wish that I had bought it in the phone book-sized trade format– rather than as individual comics– as I’d be more likely to reread the series. However you choose to buy your Terry Moore comics, he’s always a great writer/artist worth supporting.Betrayal of the Planet of the Apes TP
160 pages

Status – Severely Tempted

Additional Notes – I love the Planet of the Apes movies (the originals, not the Tim Burton one obviously) but POTA comics are usually a bit rubbish. I’ve heard Boom Studios books are actually really good– plus this one has Gabriel Hardman on art… Which is why I’m severely tempted even though I’m already at my budget limit this month.Judge Dredd Inferno TP
144 pages

Status – Definite POS

Additional Notes – There is some debate among Dredd fans as to which is the worst JD story of all time: Inferno written by Morrison and Millar or Book of the Dead by Morrison/Millar… The only consensus being that both books are phenomenally shit.Cinema Retro: Where Eagles Dare Tribute Special
80 pages

Status: Firm Order

Additional Notes – I love Cinema Retro magazine. Their Kelly’s Heroes Special last year was excellent. Sure, this looks a bit expensive for a magazine but the quality of articles and photos justify it.Taskmaster Statue
Bowen Designs

Status – If I won the lotto perhaps

Additional Notes – If I was loaded and wasn’t boycotting Marvel product, I’d buy this in a heartbeat. I’ve always liked the Taskmaster as a character and this is a beautiful model.

Super Robot Chogokin: Armored Core V – UCR10/A

Status – Probable Order

Additional Notes –  I love Japanese mecha and its rare for diecast mecha models to be offered through Previews. This looks like a really gorgeous piece too– with lots of additional parts, guns and things.

Cthulhu Knitted Ski Mask

Status – If I were mentally ill, then perhaps

Additional Notes – This is one of those products that makes you go, “Why?!” I mean, seriously, who the fuck would want this?Judge Dredd Mug

Status: Tempted

Additional Notes – Now this is a novelty that has me tempted. A Judge Dredd mug with Ron Smith art? Nice. It’s just a pity that tea and coffee are illegal in Mega-City One. I’ll just have to find a Synthi-Caf supplier I guess.Strike Witches: The Complete First Season Blu-ray

Status – Much cheaper on Amazon

Additional Notes – This anime is set on an alternate Earth where Nazis never existed and WW2 is fought against mysterious aliens out to conquer the earth. “Our” side uses girls with magical aircraft propellers strapped to their legs, armed with gigantic machine guns. This is a fun anime but probably not universally popular due to its levels of fanservice. (Ask Insideman about fanservice.)

That’s it for this month. Let us know if there’s anything coming up that you think is worth looking at.

Its good to dream though right? It would be nice to be able to get stuff like this and not have the “honey we can still make the next mortgage payment” conversation!

  2. M. Fewko says:

    PUNK ROCK JESUS looks neat.

    • Locusmortis says:

Thats what I thought as well, his work on Joe the Barbarian was great, I can see this one being every bit as good

If I was still 18 and in some over the top rock band, I’d totally get one of my band members to wear the Cthulhu mask.

  4. I ordered Berni Wrightson Muck Monster instead of Neal Adams Thrill Kill..because those pages will look better (seperately) on a wall imo…Thrill Kill is a great story but nothing eyecathing..Berni is classic horror..

23 dollars for 96 pages of Batman? Is it like super-oversized?

I assume IDW will milk out Judge Dredd in the coming months..I would not mind some stellar color reprints of the Judge from IDW..They hinted at something along those lines..but I have nothing that confirms that

The Eerie mag always bring back memories.lf the Adams folio is the sniper story that l remember, l might get it, otherwise l’m w/ Hack, although l’m a fan of both Adams n’ Wrightson, Wrightson’s pen & inks r almoxt like paintings! Simonson has always been hit or miss 4 me, 4 the most part, his superhero stuff, just leaves me cold (i.e. Teen Titans vs X-men) Wasn’t feeling his Batman stuff either, w/ the exception of when Manhunter was in it. Speaking of which; Loved Paul Kirk::Manhunter! Also his run on Thor (Beta Rae, one of the greatest creations EVER)

After having missed out on Moore’s SlP, l decided 2 get in on the ground floor w/ Echo. After the 1st few issues, l decided 2 pick it up in trade, instead. After five or six trades, l let it go, but what l had, l enjoyed immensely.Been debating on whether or not 2 give Rachel a shot.

    Good 2 see your column back,Locus. 🙂

Its good to be back Phil 🙂

The Adams story IS the sniper story and it is a great one, I guess its just not what I’m looking for in a portfolio. Wrightson’s work look like woodcut paintings by Gustav Doré or something, I’d love to see them framed and hung up on a wall thats for sure.

I love the Manhunter stuff Simonson did as well, the panel layouts on that series were fantastic, you can see him innovating with every new page. His Fantastic Four run in the late 80’s was excellent as well and his Orion series for DC in the early 2000s is worth tracking down in the back issue bins, its some brilliant stuff.

@hackslash – I don’t know if the Judas Coin is oversized or not, there are no dimensions given in Previews or Amazon for it. I did notice on Amazon that its discounted down to $13. An original hardcover for $13 is pretty decent value I have to say, you’d only get 3 and 1/4 issues of a Marvel comic for that! 😀
