There was some very cool news that came out of yesterday’s Metal Gear 25th Anniversary Event held in Tokyo.
The first bit concerns a Hollywood Metal Gear film– which will be released by Columbia Pictures and produced by Avi Arad. Arad, who was at the event, had this to say, “For many years, I fought to bring comics to theaters. Comic books are now the biggest genre in cinema. Video games are the comic books of today. We will take our time and tell the story with all the nuances, ideology, cautionary tales needed.”
No more details were given on the film– which is most likely in pre-pre-pre-production. That’s purely a guess on my part. There have been plans for making a MG movie for years and nothing’s ever materialized. Though, Arad was there in person, so maybe it’s for really this time. (Still not really holding my breath.)
Next came the announcement of a new Metal Gear game for smartphones using the GREE platform. Titled Metal Gear Solid: Social Ops, the card battle based game (think Metal Gear Ac!d for the PSP) will let you relive stories from past entries in the series and form a battalion with cards to engage in battle. The game will also have Mother Base development aspects, similar to Peace Walker. Judging by the art, the game seems to focus on MGS 3: Snake Eater, MGS: Peace Walker and MGS 4: Guns of the Patriots. A playable build of the game will be shown off at next month’s Tokyo Game Show.
Last, and most importantly, Metal Gear’s creator Hideo Kojima announced a new game called Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes. A demo was shown at the event which ran on a PC at current-gen specs. The game reportedly has also been designed with the Playstation 3 and XBox 360 in mind. Ground Zeroes runs on Kojima Productions new Fox Engine. I can only assume this is the game the KP was hiring programmers for back in February. The demo showed Snake infiltrating a rain-drenched compound, avoiding search lights, using stealth before killing a guard, driving off in a jeep and then calling a helicopter in for evac. The demo also played out in an open-world environment.
The trailer for MGS: Social Ops and the demo for MGS: Ground Zeroes have not made their way online yet, but pics from both games have. The images from Ground Zeroes feature a character wearing a sneaking suit (which sports a Militaires Sans Frontières logo) and an eye patch. It looks like Naked Snake/Big Boss is back for Ground Zeroes– and that has me quite excited.
When the trailers pop up I’ll definitely be post them on IMJ. In the meantime, you can check out the pics below. There are three more after the jump.
