I love corporations. No, not in a Mitt Romney kind of way… I love ’em because they are so stupid. It is beyond obvious to me (as I have mentioned before) that Marvel & DC are amazingly short-sighted in how they handle their back catalog of Trades and Hardcovers. How else can you explain the long out of print Punisher Omnibus by Garth Ennis selling right at $400 or above… Or any number of the other insanely out-of-print collections that could be making these publishers MILLIONS in additional revenue… If only they bothered to listen to their customers?
The answer is you can’t.
I’ve heard and read about some of the behind-the-scenes trickery and idiocy that is causing some of this… And it is all stupider than hell.
Which leads me to Christmas and the Holiday Gift Buying Season. Here I sit, in the wee hours of December 8th, 2012– wondering why the Big Two think everyone quit shopping two or three weeks ago. Black Friday is becoming a bigger joke every year (vis à vis actual good sale prices) and lots of people are just now scrambling to find something for that special person.
The Independent Publishers seem to get it. Image releases The Walking Dead Omnibus Vol 4 HC next week… And Dark Horse is releasing the first Fear Agent Hardcover (Fantastic!) and the Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season 8 Library Vol 3 HC next week too. DC Comics? The New 52 Zero Omnibus. We reviewed several of these #0 comics and determined most of them were horrid. (Think of it as the comic book equivalent of getting a 12 pound lump of coal in your stocking.) At least DC sorta makes up for their lack of ingenuity and originality by releasing Jack Kirby’s Kamandi Last Boy On Earth Omnibus Vol 2– but this volume still remains as something that should have been published years ago. And Marvel? How about yet another Deadpool HC and some Trade Reprints of some inconsequential/random Hardcovers released in the last six months?
God help you if you’re still patiently crossing your fingers that a Statue from DC Direct (that was supposed to arrive in July) will suddenly appear by December 24th. My experience has always been that it’ll be here the first or second week of January.
Nothing says “Better Luck Next Year!” than an IOU under ol’ Tannenbaum!
Here’s something you can buy now, at least… Even though Joe Casey’s Butcher Baker, The Righteous Maker HC probably ranks as one of the most antithetical Christmas Gifts of the Year. Ring in the Holidays with Hookers & Blow… And one self-centered, Mean Mother of a Superhero.
Casey’s narrative is a weird psycho blend of everything that is wrong with most mainstream comics– amped up by a rate of ten thousand. Somehow by doing this, Casey makes all the grim and gritty seem more than okay. Artist Mike Huddleston makes every perverse, insane moment even more psycho and rewarding.
I was actually reading this as a monthly comic (when I re-experimented with that craziness for about eight months) and I would’ve finished it off that way too… If not for some kind of (reported) controversy between the creators (Blah, blah, blah) that kept the last issue of the series from seeing release for (what seemed like) a decade. By the time the last comic did see the dim, hazy light of funky smelling comic shops across the world, I figured I’d just wait for the inevitable Hardcover and save the last issue as a treat for myself… Before placing the book in my permanent collection.
My patience (for once) was rewarded. This is an over-sized hardcover with backmatter that will actually be worth reading. (We’ve discussed Casey’s cool essays in the back of each monthly before– so they better be in here too.) Whatever you do, don’t allow the amazingly shitty cover for this collection throw you off. What’s inside is worth every penny.
