Locusmortis’ PREVIEWS Hits and Misses™ Rating Comic Shop Offerings for June 2013 and July 2013

LM PREVIEWS COLUMN BANNERLM Previews June 2013 July 2013 Banner

Every month I pre-order comics, trades and other related items from Previews magazine. Even though there is information online for just about everything, I still find the Previews catalog to be the simplest way to scan through the different items and to get some inspiration on what I want to buy.

There’s lots of stuff being offered by Diamond this month: Plenty of great stuff and plenty of crap too… So I will try to sort the wheat from the chaff and hopefully point out some good items that you might order or buy from your LCS or Online Retailer. Our taste may differ– so if you buy something and I hate it… Don’t blame me. I did my best to warn you!

The STATUS in the description of each product indicates the likelihood of whether I’m going to order it ranging from Firm Order as the most likely to a POS (Piece of Shit)– with everything else being somewhere in between. I’m sure you can figure it out!

Additional Notes: 32 pages for $4.99? Uh right… Anyway, the last time Jim Lee drew a Superman regular title it was a complete abortion.

Anyone want to take bets on how many issues Lee can draw before he needs a fill-in artist?

Additional Notes: If you haven’t already read Strangers in Paradise, then this is the perfect opportunity to do so. $100 may seem like a lot– but for what you get, it’s a bargain.

If you still feel guilty about spending so much, then you could slip some hints to your significant other about how this would be a great birthday present or early Xmas gift.

Additional Notes: So how did a small Danish plastics company become one of the toy industry’s biggest companies? This seems like a pretty fascinating story.

Of course the current Lego seems a lot different from the one I used to play with as a kid– back then it seemed to encourage imagination, whereas now it seems heavily focused on pushing certain Hollywood brands. Wow! That argument sounds familiar…LM PREVIEWS APPAREL BANNER FINAL

A pretty good month for Comics, I think– but with no one publisher dominating the picks, you have to delve a bit deeper into the independent ranks to find the good stuff.

Not a particularly good month for Statues/Toys/Collectibles… I guess Summer isn’t the best time to be selling overpriced pieces of plastic. Let us know what you think of this month’s selection and if you’ve found any good (or weird) shit in your local comics shop.

14 Responses to Locusmortis’ PREVIEWS Hits and Misses™ Rating Comic Shop Offerings for June 2013 and July 2013

  1. Insideman says:

One of the joys of working so hard on IMJ: Getting to spend time working on fantastic posts by talented people. The great thing about Locusmortis’ Previews post– I always leave actually reading it until AFTER all the design work is done… And I laugh ALL the way through.

Great way to finish off working with a post!

Please promote this far and wide… Jose and I would really appreciate your efforts!

    • Insideman says:

For the record… I am not a fan of the Chrome Tardis teapot. 😉 That looks like something Millar and Finch would barf up.

That said, I was a fan of the realistically colored Tardis Teapot (which is what LM is referring to)… Until I saw how horribly it was detailed. Probably why they brought out the chrome one– little detailing needed (that looks like a sticker on the side of the pot) and it goes with your silver tea set.

I would buy a Tardis Teapot… And will, if anyone ever gets their asses out of their heads long enough to make one that seems more akin to the actual dimensions of an old Police Box. Hmmm, maybe a Tardis ICED TEA pitcher?

  2. Locus, When you said “Skeptical Rice Buddy 11” Plush” did you mean “Maxi Pad?” LOL Why would any kid want to buy that thing?

  3. ed2962 says:

Mark Schultz was awesome. He’s almost criminally overlooked.

    Same for Mike Kaluta.

New project from Greg Rucka. Hmm…

I fell behind with Prophet, but yes…very good comic.

It’s interesting, this Joe Mad Wolverine story was originally supposed to be a 2nd Avenging Spiderman, but I guess it took so long for Joe to finish it and the title got cancelled, so it’s a Savage W story now.

Rogue Touch. I’m conflicted. One hand I think the big 2 should do more to reach girls and young adults, but after reading the description of the novel I’m like, “But that’s not MY Rogue!” Same for She-Hulk Dairies.

Captain America! This is the one where the Red Skull is Italian and JD Salinger’s son wears plastic ears! 90’s!

  4. ComicBookDude says:

But I like Joe Mad… (his Spider-Man does have weird arms on that cover)

That Yellow Lantern is such a joke… I like how they couldn’t be bothered to sculpt details on it. They just made a basic lantern, painted it yellow, and slapped a $200 price tag on it.

If I could only choose between burning $300 or giving it all to Mark Millar on a figure (that doesn’t really look like Hit-Girl) I would also burn $300.

So excited for Lazarus #1 to come out next week! It will probably be the first thing I read.

Why people (pretend to) like Superior Spider-Man is beyond me. That comic is garbage. It’s not even a matter of opinion at this point, it’s garbage and if anybody asks me my opinion on that comic I tell them run away from it and put their $4 to better use. (It still is a matter of opinion, but I wish it didn’t have to be for Superior Spider-Man. I hate that comic so much). Wake me up when Joe Quesada, Dan Slott, and Axel Alonso stop throwing their 24/7 “We fucking hate Spider-Man” party.

  5. tomstewdevine says:

I’ll give Lee 3 issues before he drops off that Superman book.

  6. tomstewdevine says:

I can’t believe Ales Kot is writing for DC, I really hope they use his talents correctly in the future. Wild Children and Change were good books, that were borderline insane, yet genius. If DC knew what they were doing they would have him write a weird Spectre book or something……. Actually he should just continue to put our great miniseries from Image and say FUCK DC.

  7. NicktheStick says:

Just a little awhile ago, I was at a conference where the author of Brick by Brick spoke – It was really interesting. I would suspect the book is good as well and with a lot more detail.

  8. wwayne says:

I didn’t know that Magic Wind had been published in the U.S.. Being italian, I’m very proud of it. : )

    • Locusmortis says:

Hey Wayne, I was pretty surprised to see it as well. I hope it lives up to my expectations 🙂

      • wwayne says:

And I hope to read your review of Magic Wind as soon as possible! Also, I never read that series: I definitely must catch up. Thank you for your reply! : )
