There seems to be a certain tide of sentiment rising among comic fans and professionals that it’s BAD to criticize Marvel, DC– or any other publisher that prints a lame comic book.

I don’t buy it… Not in the least.

With the Big Two fully corporatized now, we’re all supposed to stand blithely by while creators are treated like dog shit– or worse, dog shit underneath someone’s heel? To that I ask a one word question, “Why?” The most common response I receive? “Oh you don’t want to be upsetting people… They’re just trying to make a living like all us regular joes.”

Oh! Look how shiny and… Lenticular it is. I wish I could buy 10!

OK. I get that. But then you have to remember NO ONE put a gun to any of these shitty Comic Book Editors, Writers or Artists and forced them into a life of indentured funny book servitude. These creators all came to this industry because they wanted to. A few may have also landed in the comic biz because they didn’t have the chops (or the schmoozing skills) to make it in the Movie or TV business. Some may have even gotten here because they couldn’t write a novel to save their souls.

Simply stated, I don’t care why or how.

How some shit-ass creator got into comics doesn’t interest me. For whatever reason (like I just said) they came here of their own free will. All I care is they’re here now— for better or worse– and they’re fucking up something I love. By landing jobs and submitting scripts that will eventually become comic books, they offer themselves up to the arena of public criticism. Some will be lauded, others will be heartily criticized– and the vast majority will be given free passes to run amok and ruin… Simply because most publishers don’t care about quality at all. This is a business. They care about sales… The bottom line… The money that will line their cynical pockets.

As long as these no-talent writers and artists move books to the less than discriminating masses, they can shit all over your beloved characters and feel nary a hint of regret or pinch of reprimand. So the next time some “fan” tells you to stop being so “negative” or so vocal with your “negativity”– stamp your foot to the ground and yell, “Bullshit!” Most people (especially the thin-skinned comic book “auteurs”) will tell you your point of view damages the creative process. To that I say, “Horseshit!”

There are plenty of followers in this hobby, immature sycophants who will lap up repetitive old comic crossovers or badly drawn stories. If you don’t say something, who will? The thousands of idiots who believe “insert of creator here” or “insert name of publisher here” can do no wrong? Of course not. I submit the “naysayers” are the most valuable fans in this (or any) entertainment medium.

If you think things suck now, imagine what Comics, TV or Films would be like if no one ever expressed any thoughtful criticism about any type of entertainment.
