Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season 10 #1, Daredevil #1, Lazarus #7, Rocket Girl #4 + Wonder Woman #29
I’ll be testing the mettle of two New #1 comics this week– essentially to see how they fare against there previous runs. So, yup, I’m gearing up for a new comics week which might end up a bit more pleasant than the last few. I have 3 solid titles being pulled for my club this week: Greg Rucka’s Lazarus #7, Amy Reeder’s Rocket Girl #4 and the only DC monthly title worthy of mention– Wonder Woman #29. Those three comics, plus the 2 new #1s, will bring my new comic picks to 5 this week.
While I felt Angel and Faith Season One was one of the best series released by any publisher in the last few years, I almost completely loathed Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9… So much so, I dropped the book after only the second story arc. While Buffy’s writing and horrendous art were all over the place, Angel and Faith was filled with Christos Gage’s excellent scripts and Rebekah Isaacs beautiful art.
If Buffy The Vampire Slayer was so terrible last time out, why am I picking up this new series? Because Gage and Isaacs are taking over– and since this is the Buffyverse’s flagship title— it’s how things should be. I am really quite excited to read it.
And look! A Marvel comic on my weekly pull list? Believe it or not, this is NOT a mistake. The previous Daredevil series by Mark Waid was one of the few enjoyable reads Marvel has published in, like, forever. Bringing artist Chris Samnee (who handled a lot of Waid’s DD stories last time out) to this first issue makes it a must buy. When you get a creative combo like this (just like on Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season 10 #1), I feel the need to support it.
There are fewer and fewer amazing comics in this glutted industry, so I’ll always use my wallet to tell publishers when they are making the correct creative decisions. We all know money talks and bullshit walks…
