Nick Furi’s ODDS and ENDS™- This Week’s Pop Culture News Round-Up!

Nick Furi's Odds & Ends Banner 2013 Final

Comics – Do you prefer reading comics in the digital format? If you just answered, “Yes”… Then cool… At least you’re still reading comics. Now one more: Do you dislike giving  ultra-megasaurus corporation Amazon your money? If you answered “Yes” to that question too, I’ve got some bad news for you… Cause Amazon just bought Comixology. Whether this announcement is a good thing or a bad thing depends on if you like to read physical copies of comic books too… Cause there’s little doubt Amazon will help drive a huge nail into the printed comic book’s coffin. Don’t believe me? Watch and see. [Comixology Unbound]

Film – Boring movie posters are back, baby! After I praised IMAX for their awesome Captain America The Winter Soldier poster, it only took a couple of weeks before this first round of Michael Bay’s TMNT movie posters hit the Net. Those who enjoy fisting and/or bo staffs will surely be pleased.  [Screen Crush]

Comics – DC Comics takes their Marvelization one step further by stealing one of their main competitor’s most heinous marketing tactics: DC is relaunching not one– but TWO– comic book series… Right after they both hit their 30-issue mark. Meet the All-New 52 Teen Titans (that’s a fake title) and the New Suicide Squad (that’s a real title). It’s official: The Big Two comic publishers have completely run out of ways to trick fanboys into giving a shit. [IGN, IGN]

Conventions – With the news Conan O’Brien’s filming a week of shows at 2015’s SDCC, Comic Con International’s focus moves even further away from the original source material (that’s comic books— in case you didn’t know). That said, O’Brien is probably the only late night host who could successfully invade this massive nerd meet and still keep his street cred. Now, ask me if I give a shit… Come on, I double dare you. [Rolling Stone]

Collectibles – Gimme, gimme, gimme! You should always be sure you can see that “Void stuff.” If you didn’t get that Doctor Who joke (which goes perfectly with the figure below), no worries… Here’s to all the great sex you’ll surely be having with other non-Geeks this week. [Tomopop]

Television – Yes! Two BIG NAME ACTORS are set to reappear on… Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D… On ABC! (Not to be confused with the DC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D program currently airing on the SyFy Network.) After Captain America The Winter Soldier, it makes complete sense Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) and Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill) would come back to the show. Hopefully they’ve brought some nifty plot fixes with them as well… As it’s way past time to tie-up all the dangling loose ends plaguing this crazy series. [Nerdist, Nerdist]

Film/Conventions – Did Nathan Fillion just let slip he’s in Guardians of the Galaxy?!? At a recent con panel, a fan asked about his friendship with Guardians writer/director James Gunn— and if Nathan ever tried using their connection to get a part in the film. Nathan responded, “Wanting to get a part… Or maybe did. I’m just saying maybe. Maybe you’ll be surprised. Maybe. Check the credits.” It could be a big joke for Nathan (he does like to play those) but then Gunn tweeted something that seemed to corroborate this little leak. A true geek at heart, Fillion deserves to get a cool role in a superhero movie. Either way, we all must remember– The Hammer is his penis! [Screen Rant, Perez Hilton]

Art – Josh Cooley awesomely decided to take some not-so-kid-friendly scenes from classic movies and illustrate them in a style similar to the art found in most children’s books. Buy prints HERE so you can cherish these pieces forever… And ever… And ever. [Comics Alliance]

Television – Under the “No fucking shit” category comes news of a Game of Thrones renewal for Seasons 5 and 6. Come on HBO, don’t even pretend you aren’t going to give this show free reign until the showrunners decide to end it. Luckily, the peeps in charge seem to be following the actual written story (more or less). Now here’s hoping George R.R. Martin actually ends it on the written page… And soon. [Variety]

Film – It appears Peter Mayhew will reprise his role as Chewbacca in Star Wars Episode VII. Once again, this makes me think the filmmakers plan to throw a quick nod to the original cast of characters… And then move on. Truth be told, I’m secretly hoping Episode VII has Jar Jar (who’s gone over to the Darkside) kill Chewy as a final “Fuck You!” to everyone whoever spent a dime on anything Star Wars. [ICv2]

Comic Book “News” – Deadpool #27 (The Wedding Issue) sets a world record for most recognizable characters on a single cover!!! Seriously… This is what passes for comic book “news” nowadays?!? Beside the whole Amazon getting in on the circle jerk known as “comics retailing” and DC’s gimmicky renumbering stunt– this is all the comic “news” I could find this week. And before you start believing I’m a completely bitter asshole (too late, I know), I’ll try to end on a high note. Nope… Sorry. I got nothin’. [Robot 6]

Indeigogo/Table Top – Ever since Zach Braff’s Kickstarter campaign copied Veronica Mars’ success, a tidal wave of mid-level creators seem ready for their crowdfund close up… Which is how Wil Wheaton makes his way into Odds and Ends for the second week in a row– attempting to fund TableTop Season 3 with Indiegogo. With 30 days remaining, the initial goal of $500,000 for 15 episodes has already been reached. Late-to-the-party contributors can still participate in stretch goals for more episodes and a RPG campaign spin-off series. The swag seems pretty cool too… So have at it, Daddy Warbucks. [Indiegogo]

Film – The Hollywood REHASH TRAIN keeps on chuggin’… With a “new” re-imagining of Battlestar Galactica on the way. The difference from the last TV reboot? This time, BG’s going to be a full-blown film… Or at least, that’s what Universal hopes. The most recent series did bring me one of my favourite characters in a long time– Kara Thrace (aka Starbuck)– played by the wonderful Katee Sackhoff… So this new version better give me an equally strong female lead, or I’m out before they ever yell, “Action!” [The Verge]

Television – Lost co-creator Damon (I Can’t Believe I’m Still Getting Paid To Write The Shit I Do) Lindelof has a new HBO series… And not-so-big surprise, the teaser raises a bunch of questions. My prediction: Right after the series’ finale, HBO will pay people to go out and deliver a swift kick to the groin of every viewer– to really drive home the point they’ve just wasted a small part of their life watching something Damon Lindelof wrote. [MTV]
