Nick Furi’s ODDS and ENDS™- This Week’s Pop Culture News Round-Up!

Nick Furi's Odds & Ends Banner 2013 Final

Comics – Not too long ago, the X-Men and the Avengers had a major spat… Where they all seemed eager to eradicate each other from existence. Flashforward 2 years: Now they’re buddies again, ready to save the world from the next evildoer. Hmmm… Marvel’s next crossover event sounds kind of boring, doesn’t it? Almost like I’ve read it before… [Marvel]

Amazing Infographic – Almost every Game of Thrones fan has, at some point, been a bit confused about which characters are which and how they relate to each other. Well, now you can sleep soundly, after you devour this insane infographic. It explains each house and what each member has been doing over the last 4 seasons. It’s almost as intense as one of George R.R. Martin’s wedding scenes. [Nerdist]

Self Help Video – Do you have a loved one who suffers from binge watching? Make sure they watch this video before their addiction ruins their life. They’ll see just how awful things can truly get.

Television – It’s exciting to see US TV Networks finally starting to realize condensed seasons can be a major benefit to some TV shows. Obviously, there are always exceptions to the rule– but having a more structured, quick-paced season is generally better for many series. FOX is delivering less episodes of Gotham and ABC just followed suit by giving Marvel’s Agent Carter an 8-episode first season. A quick look at some of the best shows from the last few years (Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Orphan Black, Luther, etc.) makes it clear some series greatly benefit from a shorter, sharper focus. Film – Ever since Disney purchased Marvel, I’ve been waiting for the first Marvel/Disney animated movie to appear. Great news! Their first collaboration is almost here and it’s far from the anything I thought they would make. Big Hero 6 hits theatres this November… And I’m actually excited! [IndeWire]

Collectibles – Toymaker Hasbro seems to have stolen a page out of the “Marvel Playbook” with their new Marvel Legend figures– by making fans purchase a bunch of extra shit they don’t want… To get something they do want. There’s only one way to obtain the new Jubilee toy… By buying her in small, individual pieces bundled with the other characters produced for this wave. These type of shady practices are disgusting. The image below is what collectors have to look forward to. [Tomopop]

X-Men Legends

Film – Something else that excites the hell out of me! I’m amped to see X-Men: Days of Future Past this weekend, but the new Guardians of the Galaxy trailer has turned the coolness factor up to 11. Is it August yet? [IMJ]

Hot House – Who wants to own Tony Montana’s house from Scarface? If it’s you, today is your lucky day! The mansion’s for sale and will only cost you a measly $35 Million. [Wall Street Journal]

Comics – It’s great to see Wonder Woman getting a weekly digital first comic. The problem is Gail Simone and Ethan Van Sciver are teaming up again– and we all know how well that turned out last time. I’m willing to give this out-of-continuity book a chance, but I don’t expect it will take too long before one these creators gets sick of the other and bails. [CBR]

Collectibles – Captain Mal! Funny thing about this news bit: I was just going to type “Captain Mal!”… But as soon as my finger lifted off the exclamation point key, the Firefly Theme Song started playing on my iTunes. Is this a sign I should purchase this or what?!? [QMx]

New 52 Deja Vu – Like clockwork, DC Comics has canceled 6 more books. I don’t give a shit about comics like Birds of Prey or Superboy… Since they were pretty awful from the first issue. But I, and many members of the IMJ Nation™, will be extremely sad to say goodbye to Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray’s Batwing and All-Star Western. Fun comics like these will be missed. [Comic Vine]

Monster Video – Who wants a Pacific Rim and Godzilla mash-up?

Table Top Games – The latest version of Dungeons and Dragons has just been announced. Starting July 15, you can begin your crazy quests with the Starter Set… And the remaining products will see a staggered release throughout the Summer and into the Fall. [io9]

Television – This is a very interesting piece on Orphan Black’s character, Helena. I really disliked this shady bleached-blonde during the first season and was very skeptical I would ever change my mind after watching Season Two’s first episode reveal. Now I can’t picture this show without the crazy Russian! She’s a welcome addition to the Clone Club. [Nerdist]

Expensive Comic Art – Holy Shit! The art from the last page of The Incredible Hulk #180 featuring the first official appearance of Wolverine— just sold for a helluva lot… Like $657,250 a lot. The massive sale price gives this famous page the record for most expensive piece of American comic art. What makes this story even better? The majority of the proceeds are going to the Hero Initiative. [ICv2]

Faux Video – Why can’t this be a real service?!

Nick and I almost always see eye to eye. But I have a huge bone to pick with Orphan Black. Many might remember I was one of the first Geeks (if not the first) to truly tout this show last year. Almost everyone I talked said, “What’s Orphan Black?”

I am so disappointed with this New Season. Like Nick, I couldn’t stand Helena at first. Unlike Nick, I STILL can’t stand her. Plus, I think the show is unbelievably convoluted now. So much so, I’m not sure I can remember when a great series went downhill so fast.

Still love Tatiana Maslany… But the best actress in the world can’t fix this mess. I totally blame the writers and the producers.

I definitely understand where you are coming from. The pacing has been all over the map this season. And, it seems like the writers are just trying to toss a bunch of shit on the wall to see what sticks.

But I still find the show watchable – and Tatiana Maslany makes it worth while. I still can’t believe how she is able to string together so many great performances. Another thing I have noticed they are trying to do this season is give us crazier moments/cliff hangers. (I mean Mrs. S kicking ass was pretty fucking cool.) But while I am enjoying those parts, I bet this is one of the reasons you find this season to be a big ball of mess.

I’m still enjoying myself, but not as much as season one. I’m hoping the mysteries they are trying to put forth will have a good payoff, allowing for the problems to be overlooked a bit.
