Nick Furi’s ODDS and ENDS™- This Week’s Pop Culture News Round-Up!

Nick Furi's Odds & Ends Banner 2013 Final

Television – I really wish I had a TARDIS so I could travel to August 23, 2014 and watch the first episode of Doctor Who Season 8. Good News: We already know some of the villains who will face off against the Doctor and his companions this year. Click the links… If your curiosity gets the better of you. [Digital Spy, Comic Book Movie]

Comics – At least now I know when I’ll be dropping Wonder Woman. The unlucky day will come sometime in November, when the 36th issue hits the stands. Meredith and David Finch will take over the series (after the acclaimed run from Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang), leaving me with zero DC comic books on my pull list. This will be the first time since I started collecting that I will not have a single book from the Big Two on order via subscription. This shift’s been happening slowly over the last couple of years, and will bring me nothing but sadness– since I won’t reading books featuring some of my favourite characters. At least I can numb the pain with great indie comics. [CBR]

Video – Check out how the partying crew of the Enterprise handles a Borg attack.

Television – The worst thing about watching a TV show you love is the uncertainty of when/if it will be back. Community has always had the “if” factor… And with Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock bringing them deserved fame, who knew “if” it would ever come back? Thankfully, the “Beeb” officially confirmed a one-off special for 2015 and a 3-episode 4th Series– probably for 2016 (possibly for 2015– we’ll see.) I know the wait seems unbearable, but we’ve all done it before and we can do it again. If you still don’t think you’ll be able to make it, I may have some solutions for you:

Step 1) Re-watch all three series over again.

Step 2) Continue to do this over and over again until you can no longer stand to look at Holmes and Watson. At this point you will feel the need to have a long break from the show, making the wait seem more bearable.

Step 3) Take up a new show that will take you a long time to get through. I suggest Buffy and Angel, ST:TNG, Game of Thrones, BSG, Chuck or Luther.

Step 4) If the previous 3 steps don’t work, I’m sorry but… You’re fucked. Please don’t do anything rash– just try to tough it out. Join a support group (or make one of your own if you have to).

Step 5) When Sherlock Series 4 finally gets released– watch the hell out of it.

Step 6) Repeat steps 1-5 until we get word if there ever will be a Series 5. [BBC]

Comics – Really!? Do we actually need TWO new Batman-related comic books series? This is one of the many reasons, come November, I won’t be purchasing any mainstream books on a regular basis. Why? Cause this seems like just another way for DC Comics to gouge every last penny from their loyal fans. The solicitations state there will be a bunch of new characters, but my bet is that there will be a few new characters– coupled with a bunch of rehashed ideas. [ICv2]

Collectibles – This is such a cool vinyl statue of Marv from Sin City. Truth be told, it looks better than the second film. [Comics Alliance]

Television – Mental Note: Violence is “OK” but smoking is icky and bad. I’m not advocating smoking (and I’m sure Constantine’s showrunners wouldn’t either), but everyone’s “censorship” concerns over this particular comic book turned TV show appearing on a major US Network have just been justified… As John Constantine will not be allowed to smoke on screen. Why is this bad? Because this isn’t some random thing the show creators want to toss into the show because they think it’s cool… The filthy habit is a flawed character trait that actually plays a major part in the comic book’s story-line. Oh well, it’s good to know where the censorship line is drawn in the ridiculous US Network TV sand– where the beaches can be loaded with rotting corpses and blood spewing into a lake turning the water red– but boobs, swearing and smoking are nowhere to be seen. I feel more holy already. [/Film]

Returns and Sequels – Pacific Rim 2 is officially confirmed and Community is picked up for a Sixth Season?!? This could be the best week of my entire life! Okay… That’s stretching hyperbole to extreme lengths, but still– this news makes it a very good 7 days for me! (Side Note: Here’s a very interesting article from a Sony Exec about bringing Community back from the darkest timeline). [Coming Soon, Time]

Comics – Mark Waid returns to Boom! Studios with a new creator-owned series! While his Daredevil is universally admired here at IMJ, I like to see amazing creators taking on something entirely their own. With the way Waid’s has been rocking the industry lately, he most likely won’t miss. I can’t wait! [ICv2]

Video – The trailer for Studio Ghibli’s new movie, When Marnie Was There, makes me really want to see this film…which is exactly what a trailer should do. Well done!

Television – It’s been awhile since I went back and watched the first season of Heroes. (Mostly because I’m still mad about how it all went downhill so quickly.) In any case, I never realized the Ninth Doctor Who, Christopher Eccleston, played the Invisible Man on the show… And apparently, he would love to reprise his role in the new Heroes Reborn mini-series. If this does happen, it would peak my curiosity for the new series just a bit more. [The Mary Sue]

Weird Apps – There is an app out there that will allow you to only text “Hodor” to your friends. I really want to see what it is like, but due to some iTunes issues I haven’t been able to download it yet. But don’t let my problems stop you from “Hodor”-ing your friends for hours. Wait… Did that sound as dirty to you as it did to me? [IGN]

Film – According to Chloe Grace Moretz (aka Hit-Girl), Kick Ass 3 probably won’t happen… Apparently because the second movie was pirated incessantly. I think somebody might be feeding Chloe some true-blue bullshit, since creations like Game of Thrones survive– despite being the most pirated TV show ever… And HBO execs actually point to the record-breaking number of illegal downloads as an example of the show’s widespread appeal. My bet is a third Kick Ass ain’t happening because the sequel was even shittier than the first, the sequel also bombed bigger than the first and Mark Millar and John Romita Jr supplied even worse source material for Part 3 of the comic book series. What’s truly funny… I clicked on the YouTube link for the “Dear Hollywood” video (at the end of this column) and up popped a COMMERCIAL for the remake/reboot of “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes”!

    No shit.

  2. ComicBookDude says:

I still need to watch Sherlock… Maybe after I make my way through Doctor Who (in a rather backwards fashion). I watched all of Matt Smith’s run and am making my way thru Tennant’s series. It’s good stuff.
