I believe I’ve seen this exact same pose in many stories from Manara’s excellent comic book canon. 🙂 I also get why people are blowing this out of proportion… But then I imagine Marvel knew exactly what they were getting into when they contacted Manara for the cover.

Frankly, this is Manara’s take on the character… And it looks anatomically correct and positioned properly for a Spider-Person who is crawling over a ledge and trying to use stealth to sneak up on someone.

And hey, at least Manara ripped himself off. A quick google search found this:

    • Locusmortis says:

What do people expect when Milo Manara is doing a cover? Manara is one of comics greatest artists, if people can’t deal with eroticism then they seriously need to get a life.

      • J. says:

More than half of the people who are flipping their shit over this cover have no idea who Manara is and what kind of art he has been producing for decades. If anything people should be questioning Marvel’s decision to have a variant cover for one of their “top” female starring comics drawn by an artist almost strictly known for erotica. If Marvel is truly trying to shore up female readers, they are going about it the wrong way. This cover screams “boys club” mentality. 10 bucks says Bendis has the original piece hanging up in his office.

But then again, Marvel are getting a ton of publicity over this so you’ll see more of this type of bullshit in the future I’m sure.

        • ComicBookDude says:

I’ve never heard of Milo Manara until yesterday. It makes more sense now, knowing what he typically draws. If this this variant cover was intended to draw new female readers in, somebody needs to have their brain checked. I find it ironic that Manara, someone who’s known for erotica, swiped his own work for the variant cover of a comic whose interior artist (Greg Land) has been accused multiple times of tracing/swiping porn.

          • Insideman says:

I don’t know if I would say directly “swiped” as much as Manara is known for drawing very limber/fluid women. And if you ever want to delve into this side of comics, CBD, Manara’s work is very fun, very funny (at times) and absolutely some of the most gorgeous art ever drawn by anyone in human history. It’s worth it to read– and to look at. What an incredible artist!

            • ComicBookDude says:

Does he draw a lot of his women like that? Because someone pointed out that it’s similar to one of his other drawings:

              http://www.themarysue.com/marvel-spider-woman-variant-butt/

It seems like a very loose swipe and he did “swipe” from himself and it’s what he’s known for, so I don’t really have too much of an issue with this. My big issue is that this is not the way to go if Marvel was trying to draw in new female readers. As Jose said, it has a “boys club” mentality with it.

I’m not really into the kind of comics Manara draws, so I probably won’t be checking it out. But if people enjoy it, who am I to say that they’re wrong?

              • Insideman says:

Yes… He’s always drawn gorgeous women… And in ALL KINDS of positions. He’s not the least bit timid… That’s for sure. And when I tell you some of his stories are hilarious– they are. You mention how you “lol” at comics all the time. You would really “LOL” at some of his stories. That said, I perfectly understand why it’s not your thing… Just wanted to note that any nudity, etc… Is often the second, third, fourth consideration in a great Manara drawn story.

                • Locusmortis says:

CBD if you’ve never heard of Manara before I guess you don’t read my Previews columns, I’ve mentioned his work a number of times, Dark Horse have a series of classy and expensive hardcovers of his work. This isn’t Manara’s best work but then I don’t think he really cares too much for superheros.

I agree with you about the swipe thing, all artists have a repository of “stock” poses that they use repeatedly. If Manara is swiping here then Kirby must have swiped himself dozens of times with characters pointing a huge index finger towards the reader.

Plus, this cover is a variant which seems to be something that’s getting lost in all the noise and fury over it. If there are any female comic-book buyers interested in Spider-woman then this isn’t the cover they’re going to see on comic store shelves, the regular cover is the Land one. Many columnists and commenters on other sites seem to be posting as if this was the regular cover.

The reaction is out of proportion to the reality which is very few issues with this cover will be produced and those that are will be bought by Spider-Woman and Manara completists, most comic fans will never actually see one of these covers in the flesh.

                  • ComicBookDude says:

Good point about Kirby. He really does use that pointing finger pose a lot. Even my favorite Fantastic Four cover does that:

I do read your Previews column. I find your commentary very funny. Must not have been reading as carefully as I thought I was if I never noticed or remembered the Manara stuff 😦

But I do agree that people are getting too worked up over something that’s going to most likely be forgotten quicker than it was brought up. It’d be a different story if like you said this was the main cover that almost everybody was going to end up seeing.

                • ComicBookDude says:

I do enjoy really funny comics. Is his stuff as raunchy than Empowered? I know Empowered isn’t really all that bad, as its more of a funny superhero story than it is a sex/adult comic, but it does push it sometimes.

Speaking of Empowered, I met Adam Warren a year ago. Super nice guy and a great artist. He drew a quick sketch of Emp for me that I still need to get framed.

                  • Insideman says:

Oh yeah, Manara’s work is much raunchier than Empowered, CBD. Still very funny (at times) but A LOT more “adult” in nature.

You should frame that Empowered artwork. Adam still owes me a Dirty Pair sketch that he promised me at an SDCC from over TEN YEARS ago!

      • Insideman says:

I’m in total agreement with BOTH of you… AND I really don’t think there’s anything “wrong” with the cover either.

Like Locus said– It’s MANARA. Like Jose said– Marvel knew EXACTLY what they were doing/getting by hiring Manara… And I also agree: If they really are trying to interest more women– this is the wrong way to go about it. And back to Locus again– I agree people need to get over erotica. She’s got all her fucking clothes on!

All that understood, I would love to this hanging in MY office… Any time! 😉
